Plenty of flights land in Istanbul after midnight, especially at Istanbul Airport (IST), which is one of the busiest hubs in the region and works around the clock. A night arrival is nothing unusual here, but it does change your options: the metro stops, buses thin out, and your hotel may not be expecting you at 3am. This guide covers what still works between roughly midnight and 6am, as of October 2026.
What is open at the airport at night
Both airports operate 24 hours a day, so you will not land in an empty, locked terminal. At IST the arrivals floor has currency exchange offices and bank ATMs, free airport Wi-Fi, and taxis waiting at the rank. Some cafés stay open through the night, but we could not confirm the hours of individual outlets, so do not count on a full meal. The airport says clinical services are available 24 hours.
Two things are worth sorting before you fly rather than at 2am: mobile data (an eSIM installed at home works the moment you land; see our eSIM and SIM card guide) and the visa, if your nationality needs one (Türkiye e-visa guide). For a step-by-step of passport control, baggage and customs, read what happens after you land at IST.
Which transport still runs after midnight
| Option | Istanbul Airport (IST) | Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) |
|---|---|---|
| Metro | M11 runs from about 06:00 until around midnight; not part of the weekend night metro | M4 to Kadıköy; Metro Istanbul lists it among its Friday- and Saturday-night lines |
| Airport bus | Havaist describes a round-the-clock service, but night departures are fewer and vary by line | Havabus Taksim line every 30 minutes, 06:30–01:30; extra buses for delayed flights 01:00–04:00 |
| Taxi | 24 hours at the arrivals rank; no night tariff | 24 hours; no night tariff |
| Uber | Works 24 hours; sends a licensed taxi on the same meter | Also available |
| Pre-booked transfer | 24 hours, fixed price agreed in advance | 24 hours, fixed price agreed in advance |
The metro. The M11 airport line runs from about 06:00 until around midnight, with trains roughly every 15 minutes. Sources differ on the exact last train (between 00:00 and 00:40), and the M11 is not on Metro Istanbul's list of weekend night-metro lines. If you land after about 23:00 and still have passport control and baggage ahead of you, plan on something else. More in our M11 metro guide.
Havaist buses from IST are advertised as running 24 hours, but in the small hours departures are less frequent and not every line keeps the same timetable. Check the live departures in the Havaist app before you rely on one; our Havaist bus guide explains lines, stops and payment. Remember that the bus drops you at a central stop, not at your hotel, so at 2am you may still need a taxi for the last stretch.
At Sabiha Gökçen, Havabus publishes departures to Taksim every 30 minutes until 01:30 and says extra buses run for delayed flights between 01:00 and 04:00. The M4 metro to Kadıköy is one of the lines on Metro Istanbul's weekend night service (Friday and Saturday nights). Our Sabiha Gökçen to the city centre guide has the details.

Taking a taxi at night
For most night arrivals, the realistic choice is between a taxi, Uber and a pre-booked car. Taxis are the simplest walk-up option: at IST the rank is outside Exit Gates 9 and 13 on the arrivals floor, and queue managers direct you to the next car. A few points matter more at night:
- There is no night tariff. Istanbul Airport states that taxi fares are valid 24 hours a day. A driver quoting a special night price is not using the official tariff.
- The meter must run. Check it starts at the opening fee before you set off. Our taxi fares guide shows what to expect for the main districts.
- Queues happen. When several long-haul flights land together, the taxi queue can build even in the small hours.
- Carry some lira. Card payment in taxis has improved in 2026 but is not guaranteed. Withdraw a modest amount at a bank ATM in arrivals.
- Photograph the plate. If anything goes wrong, Istanbul's municipal complaints line is 153.
Uber at IST sends you a licensed taxi on the same meter, but with the destination set in the app, which some travellers find reassuring late at night. Our Uber at Istanbul Airport guide and taxi apps guide explain how both work.
Is it safe to arrive in Istanbul at night?
For most travellers, yes. Both airports are staffed and busy through the night, and the drive into the city is mostly on main motorways. The issues travellers report are about money rather than danger: a meter that is not switched on, a confusing fare, or someone in the arrivals hall offering a ride. A few habits help:
- Only use the official taxi rank, an app, or a driver who is holding your name. Do not accept rides from people who approach you inside the terminal.
- Share your live location or trip details with someone, and follow the route on your phone.
- Keep your passport, phone and cards in a zipped inner pocket when you are tired and juggling bags.
- The national emergency number in Türkiye is 112.
Once in the city, central districts such as Taksim and Kadıköy stay lively late, while the old city around Sultanahmet is much quieter after midnight. Our guide Is Istanbul safe? covers neighbourhoods, scams and what to do if something goes wrong.
Hotel check-in after midnight
This is the part people forget. Hotels usually treat a room as yours from the afternoon check-in time of the date you booked. If you book from the day you land and arrive at 2am, the room may not be ready, or not yours yet, until that afternoon. Options:
- Book the night before your arrival date. If you land at 01:30 on the 15th, book from the 14th. You pay for an extra night but walk straight into a bed.
- Tell the hotel your arrival time. Large hotels have a 24-hour reception. Small guesthouses and apartments may not; ask how you will get in, and get the night phone number or key-box code in writing.
- Ask about bags and breakfast. If an early check-in is not possible, most hotels will store luggage and many let you have breakfast or use a lounge while you wait.
- Check the exact address and entrance. In the old city some lanes are narrow or pedestrianised, so tell your driver the hotel name as well as the street. Our where to stay guide describes the main areas.
Landing between 4am and 7am
An early-morning landing has one big advantage: the roads are quiet, so the drive into the city is usually much faster than at rush hour, which builds on weekday mornings. The disadvantage is that you reach your hotel hours before check-in. Some travellers prefer to rest at the airport first: at IST, the landside YOTEL on the departures floor sells short cabin stays from 4 hours, while the airside YOTELAIR and the iGA Sleepod cabins are inside the international departures area, so they are no use once you have passed passport control on arrival. Details are in our Istanbul Airport guide.
If you arrive on an early flight and leave again the same day, our layover guide has realistic plans by number of hours.
Money and food when you land late
Airport exchange rates are rarely the best, so change or withdraw only what you need for the first night: a taxi fare, a bottle of water, maybe a snack. Our money guide covers ATMs, cards and where to get better rates later. If you have a pre-booked transfer that you pay in euros or dollars, you do not need lira to leave the airport at all.
Do not count on finding a full meal near a small hotel in the old city at 3am. Buy something at the airport or carry a snack. Taksim and Kadıköy have more places open late.
A pre-booked car for a night arrival
If you would rather not deal with queues, meters and lira at 2am, a pre-booked car is the simplest option. With Istanbul VIP your driver waits inside the international arrivals hall, right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight, so a late or early landing changes nothing for you, and waiting time is free.
The price is fixed, per vehicle and the same day and night: for example $70 from IST to Sultanahmet or $65 to Taksim in a Private Mercedes Vito ($80 / $75 in a VIP Vito), and $75 from SAW to Sultanahmet. Tolls, parking and fuel are included. The Vito takes up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases, a child seat is free on request, and there is water and phone chargers on board. You pay the driver on arrival in cash, in EUR, USD or TRY, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138).
