Istanbul Airport (IST) Guide: Arrivals, Left Luggage, Lounges, Sleeping and Wi-Fi

A practical guide to Istanbul Airport's single giant terminal: what happens on arrival, where to leave bags and what it costs, lounges, sleeping options, Wi-Fi and the quickest ways into the city.

Istanbul Airport (IST) opened in 2018–2019 on the Black Sea side of the European shore, roughly 40–45 km from Taksim and Sultanahmet. Almost everything happens in one enormous terminal building, which makes it easy to understand but means long walks. This guide covers what you need on arrival, during a wait and on departure, with prices as of October 2026.

Flying into Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side instead? That is a different, smaller airport; see our Sabiha Gökçen to city centre guide.

Arriving at Istanbul Airport

International arrivals follow one fixed sequence: a walk from the gate (sometimes a long one, or a bus from a remote stand), passport control, baggage claim and customs. You then come out into the public international arrivals hall, where drivers and friends wait at the barrier. Many travellers are through in 30 to 60 minutes, longer when several large flights land together. Domestic arrivals have their own, separate exit.

Our step-by-step Istanbul Airport meeting point guide walks you through it, including what to do if a bag goes missing. If you have booked with us, your driver waits right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, holding a sign with your name.

Skip the queues outside: a driver waiting inside arrivals, fixed price, pay on arrival.

The M11 metro runs from about 06:00 until around midnight, so for very late or very early flights a taxi or a pre-booked car is the practical choice. Left luggage and lockers

Handy if you are on a layover, or checking out of your hotel hours before an evening flight. The airport runs a staffed left-luggage office on the arrivals floor, next to the domestic passenger exit, opposite exit 13, plus self-service lockers on the arrivals floor (across from Exit Gates 8 and 14) and on the departures floor (across from Ticket Sales Offices 1 and 6). Prices are per item per 24 hours:

Free Wi-Fi and getting online

Since November 2024 the airport's Wi-Fi has been free and unlimited. Older guides that mention a one-hour limit are out of date. There are two networks:

  • iGA WiFi for all passengers: choose login via mobile phone and enter the code sent by SMS, or scan your passport at one of the Wi-Fi kiosks in the terminal to get an access code. The kiosk route is the one to use if your phone has no roaming.
  • TK WiFi for Turkish Airlines passengers: log in by SMS, or after check-in with your ticket number, seat number and surname.

If you want mobile data for your whole trip, the three Turkish operators sell tourist SIM packages in the arrivals area. Our SIM and eSIM guide compares prices and explains the phone registration rule.

Money: exchange and ATMs

There are currency exchange offices, bank ATMs and bank branches in the terminal. Airport exchange rates are rarely the best in town, so change only what you need for the first day, or withdraw a small amount of lira from a bank ATM. Our money guide explains ATM fees, cards and tipping. If you book a transfer with us, you can pay the driver in EUR, USD or TRY, so you do not need lira to leave the airport.

Lounges at Istanbul Airport

All the main lounges are airside, after passport control. Which ones you can use depends on your ticket and memberships:

LoungeWhereWho gets in
Turkish Airlines Lounge (Business)International, above the duty-free hall near gate E1Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance business class
Turkish Airlines Lounge Miles&SmilesInternational, opposite gate C1Star Alliance Gold, Miles&Smiles Elite and Elite Plus
iGA LoungeInternational, mezzanine after passport controlPaid entry, iGA Pass, Priority Pass, DragonPass and others
iGA Lounge DomesticDomestic pierPaid entry and lounge memberships
Based on Layover Index (reviewed May 2026) and the airport's service pages. Access rules and time limits vary by membership.

We could not find an official walk-in price for the iGA Lounge, and resellers list very different figures for two- to six-hour passes. If you plan to pay, compare the price on igapass.com and through your lounge membership before you fly.

Sleeping at Istanbul Airport

IST has more ways to rest than most airports. Choose based on whether you are staying airside (in transit) or landside (before security or after arrival):

  • iGA Sleepod (airside). 44 private sleeping cabins at the international D gates, each with a luggage compartment and charging points. As of October 2026 the official hourly rates are €17.50 (07:00–19:00), €25 (19:00–23:00), €30 (23:00–03:00) and €25 (03:00–07:00), VAT included; a blanket and pillow set costs €5.
  • YOTELAIR (airside). A transit hotel inside the international area, in areas A–B; only international travellers can book it. Its Recharge Cabins, opposite the iGA Lounge entrance one floor up, are sold by the hour on a walk-in basis.
  • YOTEL (landside). On the departures floor, opposite check-in area P, open to anyone in the terminal. Short cabin stays start from 4 hours. Neither YOTEL property publishes its prices on the airport website, so check yotel.com.
  • Free rest areas. Airside there are seating zones with reclining chairs; they are free but fill up during the busy overnight connection waves.

Food, shopping and other services

Airside you will find a large duty-free hall and a long line of cafés and restaurants, from Turkish dishes and coffee to international chains. Landside choice is more limited, especially in the arrivals hall. Expect airport prices. Other useful services:

  • Pharmacy and medical care. There is a pharmacy in the terminal, and clinical services are available 24 hours.
  • Prayer rooms. Masjids are available in the terminal.
  • Smoking. Smoking is only allowed in designated smoking terraces and areas airside; follow the signs.
  • Tax refund. Tax-free refund offices are on the departures level, both before security and airside after passport control. Keep the goods and receipts handy in case they ask to see them.
  • Istanbul Airport Museum. A branch of the national museums is in the international transit area, showing archaeological pieces from museums across Türkiye. Entry is charged; we could not confirm the current fee.
  • Lost and found. Items lost in the terminal go to the airport's Lost and Found office; call 444 1 442.

Departing from Istanbul Airport

Allow more time than you might at home. You pass a security screening at the terminal entrance before reaching check-in, then passport control and a second security check before the gates, and the walk to some gates is long. Turkish Airlines advises arriving 3 hours before an international flight, and its check-in counters close 60 minutes before international departures. Domestic flights leave from their own pier.

Coming from the city, leave extra time in weekday rush hours. Our drivers pick you up at your hotel at the time you choose, and the price is the same day and night. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138): Private or VIP Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases, a fixed price per vehicle with tolls included, payment to the driver in cash (EUR, USD or TRY) and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. See all fixed prices or message us on WhatsApp at +90 507 055 44 36.
