How to Choose an Istanbul Airport Transfer: A Practical Checklist

Licence, price, vehicle size, meeting point, payment and cancellation: the questions to ask before you book a private transfer from IST or SAW, and the warning signs that should make you look elsewhere.

Updated October 26, 2026 8 min readRegatta Turizm · TÜRSAB 10138

Search for an Istanbul airport transfer and you get pages of companies with similar photos, similar vans and similar promises. On travel forums the same worries come up again and again: will the driver actually be there, is the price really the price, what if the flight is late, and should I pay before I travel? This checklist turns those worries into questions you can put to any company, including us, before you book.

It applies to both of Istanbul's airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side. Facts about rules and fares are given as of October 2026.

Do you need to pre-book a transfer at all?

Not always. Taxis wait around the clock at both airports and run on the city meter, Uber works at IST (it sends you a licensed taxi), and there are airport buses and a metro line. For one or two people with light bags arriving in the daytime, those options are perfectly reasonable, and often cheaper. Our guides to Istanbul Airport taxi fares, Uber at Istanbul Airport, the Havaist bus and the M11 metro explain how each works.

A pre-booked transfer earns its keep in a few situations: a family or group that would not fit in one taxi, lots of luggage, small children who need a car seat, a late-night or very early arrival, a first visit when you would rather not deal with queues and meters after a long flight, or simply wanting to know the price in advance. If that is you, the rest of this guide is about choosing well.

1. A licensed company you can identify

In Türkiye, selling transfers and tours to travellers is a travel-agency activity. Agencies hold an operating licence from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and are members of TÜRSAB, the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies. Since a 2021 amendment to the travel agency regulation, an agency must show its licence number and agency title on the opening page of its website, and at the foot of every other page.

  • Find the number. It is usually in the footer. If a transfer website shows no licence number, no company name and no address, treat that as a warning.
  • Check it. TÜRSAB's website has a member agency search (Üye Seyahat Acentaları) where you can look an agency up. The name on the licence should match the company you are dealing with, or the website should say clearly which licensed agency operates it.
  • Know who drives you. Many websites are sales fronts that pass bookings to local operators. That is not necessarily bad, but you should know which company is responsible on the day and how to reach it.

In June 2026 TÜRSAB restated its position that transport firms offering transfers without a travel agency licence are acting against the regulations. A licence does not guarantee a perfect experience, but it means there is a registered business that answers to the authorities if something goes wrong.

2. A fixed price, per vehicle, with everything included

The price is where most misunderstandings start. Before you compare two quotes, make sure they are quoting the same thing:

AskWhat you want to hearWhy it matters
Per person or per vehicle?Per vehicle, for your whole groupA per-person price for four adults can end up far higher than it first looks.
Are tolls included?Yes, all tolls and bridgesTrips across the Bosphorus or via the Eurasia Tunnel have tolls; taxis add them on top of the meter.
Airport parking and waiting?IncludedSome companies add parking or charge from the scheduled landing time.
Night surcharge?Same price day and nightLate arrivals are exactly when you want no surprises.
Child seats, extra bags?Stated up frontSome quotes add these at the end of the booking.
Which currency, how paid?A clear amount in a stated currencyAvoids exchange-rate arguments with the driver.
Questions to ask any Istanbul transfer company before you book.

Be wary of very low headline prices that grow at the checkout, and of prices quoted only as from. A fair quote for a route is one number that does not change when your flight is late or traffic is heavy. To get a feel for the taxi alternative, our taxi fares guide estimates metered fares from the official 2026 tariff.

3. The right vehicle for your people and bags

A booking that says up to 4 passengers may mean four people with hand luggage only. A standard sedan or yellow taxi fits two or three large suitcases at most. Count your bags, including strollers, golf bags and car seats, and tell the company the real numbers when you book. A good operator will tell you honestly if you need a bigger vehicle.

Ask what the car actually is. Photos on transfer websites are often generic. A named model, such as a Mercedes Vito, gives you something concrete to check. Travelling with babies or toddlers? Our guide to child seats on Istanbul transfers covers the rules and what to request.

4. Where the driver waits, and what happens if you are late

The most common horror story on forums is not a scam but a driver who is not there, or is waiting somewhere else. You can avoid most of it by asking three things:

  • Exactly where? At IST the usual place is inside the international arrivals hall, at the exit from the baggage and customs area, with a name sign. Be cautious if you are told to walk outside, cross a road or find the car in a car park on your own. Our meeting point guide shows the layout at IST and SAW.
  • Do they track the flight? Give your flight number rather than a time. The driver should follow the live arrival, so an early landing or a two-hour delay does not leave you stranded or cost you extra.
  • How long will they wait? It can take a while to get through passport control, baggage and customs. Our arrival process guide explains why. Ask how much free waiting is included after landing, and how to reach the driver if you are held up.

Ask for a contact number that works on WhatsApp, and save it before you fly. The airport Wi-Fi is free, so you can message even without a local SIM.

5. Payment and cancellation terms

There is no single right answer on payment; each model has a trade-off:

  • Pay on arrival (cash to the driver). You pay nothing until the service has actually happened, which removes the risk of paying for a no-show. Check which currencies the driver accepts and whether the amount is fixed in that currency.
  • Prepay by card. Convenient, and your card issuer may help if the service is not delivered. Make sure the refund and no-show rules are written down before you pay.
  • Deposit plus balance. Common with smaller operators. Fine if the terms are clear.

Whatever the model, read the cancellation terms. A good standard is free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Flight cancellations happen; you want to know what you will lose if yours does.

6. Reviews: what to look for

Reviews are useful when you read them for specifics rather than stars. Look for recent reviews that mention the meeting point, a delayed flight, the size of the car or a problem that was solved. Read the negative ones and see whether the company replies calmly and concretely. Be sceptical of glowing testimonials that appear only on the company's own website with no way to check them.

Booking direct, through your hotel or a marketplace

There are three common ways to book, and each suits different people:

  • Through your hotel. Simple, and the hotel knows its own address and entrance. Hotels usually use an outside transfer company, and prices vary widely, so it is worth comparing with a direct quote.
  • Through a large activity marketplace. You get the platform's booking system and refund process, but the platform passes your booking to a local operator, so the driver and car still depend on who that is.
  • Direct with a local operator. Often the clearest price, and you can speak to the people who actually run the cars. Do the licence and payment checks above.

Red flags

  • No licence number, company name or address anywhere on the website.
  • A price that changes after booking, or new charges for tolls, night, luggage or waiting.
  • Being asked to pay the full amount by bank transfer to a personal account.
  • Vague meeting instructions, or being asked to come outside to the car on your own.
  • No phone or WhatsApp number that a person answers.
  • Someone approaching you in the arrivals hall offering a ride. Your driver will be holding your name; do not go with anyone else.

If you do end up in a metered taxi instead, the usual taxi tricks are covered in our taxi apps and scams guide and in Is Istanbul safe?.

How Istanbul VIP answers the checklist

Since you are reading this on our website, here are our own answers, so you can compare them with anyone else's:

  • Licence: Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm, TÜRSAB licence 10138.
  • Price: fixed and shown before you book, per vehicle, not per person. Tolls, parking, fuel and waiting time are included, and the price is the same day and night. For example, IST to Sultanahmet is $70 in a Private Mercedes Vito or $80 in a VIP Mercedes Vito; IST to Taksim is $65 / $75; SAW to Kadıköy is $65 / $75.
  • Vehicle: Private Mercedes Vito or VIP Mercedes Vito, up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases. A child seat is free on request.
  • Meeting point: your driver waits inside the international arrivals hall, right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, with your name on a sign. We track your flight.
  • Payment: no prepayment. You pay the driver on arrival in cash, in EUR, USD or TRY.
  • Cancellation: free up to 24 hours before pickup.
  • Contact: WhatsApp, 24/7, on +90 507 055 44 36.

Questions travellers ask

Is it better to pre-book a transfer or take a taxi from Istanbul Airport?

For one or two people with light luggage arriving in the daytime, a metered taxi or Uber is usually fine and often cheaper. A pre-booked transfer makes more sense for families and groups, lots of luggage, child seats, late-night arrivals, or if you want a fixed price agreed in advance.

How do I check that an Istanbul transfer company is licensed?

Since 2021, Turkish travel agencies must show their Ministry licence number and agency title on the opening page of their website. Find that number, usually in the footer, and look the agency up in TÜRSAB's member agency search on tursab.org.tr.

Should I pay for my Istanbul airport transfer in advance?

Either can work. Paying the driver on arrival means you pay only once the service has happened. Prepaying by card is convenient and your card issuer may help if the driver never comes. In both cases, get the price, the no-show rules and the cancellation terms in writing.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

A good transfer company tracks your flight number and adjusts the pickup to the real landing time without extra charge. Ask how much free waiting is included and how to reach the driver if you are held up at passport control or baggage claim.

Where will my transfer driver meet me at Istanbul Airport?

Usually inside the international arrivals hall, at the exit from the baggage and customs area, holding a sign with your name. Confirm the exact spot when you book, and do not go with anyone who approaches you without your name on a sign.

Is a hotel transfer better than booking a transfer company directly?

Not necessarily. Hotel transfers are convenient, but most hotels use an outside company and prices vary a lot. Compare the hotel's price with a direct quote for the same vehicle and check what is included.

How many suitcases fit in an airport transfer car?

It depends on the vehicle. A standard sedan fits two or three large suitcases. Our Mercedes Vito takes up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases. Always tell the company your real number of bags, strollers and car seats.
