Istanbul Airport Taxi Fares in 2026: What You Will Actually Pay

The official Istanbul taxi tariff, estimated metered fares from IST and SAW to the main districts, and practical advice on payment, tolls and the tricks to watch for.

Taking a taxi from Istanbul Airport (IST) is easy: the rank is right outside arrivals, taxis run 24 hours a day, and every one of them is metered. The part visitors find harder is knowing what a fair fare looks like. This guide sets out the official tariff, what the meter is likely to show for the main districts, and the handful of things worth checking before you get in.

All tariff figures below are the rates in force as of October 2026. Istanbul's taxi fares are revised by the city several times a year, so check the sources at the end if you are reading this later.

How Istanbul taxis work

Every licensed taxi in Istanbul runs on a taximeter with a tariff set by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB). At the airport, taxis are operated by the Istanbul Airport cab drivers' cooperative, which, according to the airport's own website, follows the meter tariff regulated by UKOME, the city's transport coordination board.

There are three main classes. The price difference between them is fixed by the tariff, not negotiated with the driver:

  • Yellow (orange at IST) taxis are the standard class, usually a compact sedan. They are the cheapest option and fine for one or two people with normal luggage.
  • Turquoise taxis are a larger class. The airport states their fares are 15% higher than the standard yellow taxi.
  • Black taxis are the luxury class, usually a larger van or executive car. The airport states their fares are 70% higher than the standard yellow taxi.

The airport describes the turquoise and black classes as larger vehicles with more boot space and legroom, which matters if you are travelling with several suitcases.

The official taxi tariff (as of October 2026)

The current tariff took effect on 20 July 2026, after a 10% increase approved by the İBB council. It was reported by Habertürk and GZT in July 2026:

Taxi classOpening feePer kmMinimum fare (short trip)
Yellow (standard)₺71.94₺47.92₺230
Turquoise₺82.73₺55.10₺265
8+1 yellow-black₺93.52₺62.69₺300
Black (luxury)₺122.30₺81.46₺400

On top of the distance charge, the meter adds a time charge when the taxi is crawling or stopped in traffic. For yellow taxis the hourly waiting rate is ₺598.90 (as of October 2026). That is why the same trip can cost noticeably more at rush hour than late in the evening.

Is there a night tariff in 2026?

No. Istanbul taxis do not have a separate night rate. Istanbul Airport's official taxi page states that its fares are valid 24 hours a day, and none of the 2026 tariff announcements mention a night surcharge. If a driver tells you a higher "night price" applies, that is not part of the official tariff.

Tolls and bridges

Tolls are not included in the meter. The airport's taxi page says bridge tolls and toll-road charges are collected from the passenger. Whether you pay any depends on the route: trips that cross the Bosphorus (for example IST to Kadıköy, or SAW to the old city through the Eurasia Tunnel) or that use a toll motorway will have a toll added at the end. Ask the driver to show you the amount on the receipt or toll display.

Estimated taxi fares from IST and SAW

There are no fixed airport taxi prices in Istanbul; you pay what the meter shows. The estimates below are our own calculation from the July 2026 tariff: opening fee plus distance, with the upper end of each range allowing about 20% extra for slow traffic. Tolls are not included. Treat them as a guide, not a quote.

Taxi figures are estimates calculated from the İBB tariff in force from 20 July 2026 (as of October 2026), excluding tolls. Our prices are fixed, one way, per vehicle (up to 6 passengers), tolls included.

As a cross-check, Uber's own Istanbul Airport pickup page lists an average of about ₺2,625 for rides from IST lasting around 42 minutes, based on its last six months of trips (as of October 2026). That sits within the range above for the central districts.

To put the lira figures in context: at the roughly 47–48 lira per US dollar seen in mid-2026, a yellow taxi to Sultanahmet works out at about $47–57 and a black taxi at about $80–96. Exchange rates move, so check today's rate before comparing.

Where to find the taxi rank at Istanbul Airport

After customs, follow the taxi signs to the arrivals floor exits. According to the airport, all three taxi classes pick up at Exit Gate 9 and Exit Gate 13 on the arrivals floor. Queue managers at the rank direct you to the next taxi in the class you want, so you do not need to choose a driver yourself. There are also taxis on the departures floor (2nd floor).

Paying by card or cash

Under a national tax rule published in February 2026, taxis must use a fiscal device linked to the meter that issues a receipt and accepts card payments, with existing taxis required to have it by 1 September 2026. In practice, card acceptance has improved but is not guaranteed in every car, and travel forums still report "broken" card machines.

The simple approach: ask "kart?" before you get in, and carry enough Turkish lira in smaller notes to cover the fare in case the card reader does not work. Euros and dollars are not a reliable way to pay a taxi.

Common taxi scams and how to avoid them

Most Istanbul taxi rides are uneventful, and the airport rank is one of the more controlled places to take one. Still, a few tricks come up often enough to be worth knowing:

  • Meter not running. The driver suggests a round price or "forgets" to start the meter. Ask for the meter ("taksimetre, lütfen") before setting off and check that it starts at the opening fee.
  • Switching banknotes. You hand over a ₺200 note, the driver quickly swaps it and shows you a ₺20, saying you underpaid. Count your notes out loud as you hand them over and keep large notes separate.
  • The long way round. Follow the route on Google Maps or Yandex on your phone. A detour is sometimes genuine (road works, traffic), but the map lets you ask.
  • Invented extras. A "night rate", an "airport fee" or a luggage charge. None of these are in the tariff; only tolls are added to the meter.

Should you tip?

Tipping taxi drivers is not expected in Istanbul. Locals usually round the fare up to the next convenient amount. If the driver helps with heavy bags, a little extra is a nice gesture, but it is your choice.

Taxi or fixed-price private transfer?

For a solo traveller or a couple with light luggage arriving at a quiet time, a yellow taxi from the rank is usually the cheapest door-to-door option, and a perfectly reasonable one. The comparison changes in a few situations:

  • Groups and families. A standard yellow taxi takes few suitcases. With four to six people you may need a black taxi or two cars, while our Mercedes Vito carries up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases for one price per vehicle.
  • Rush hour. The meter keeps running in traffic. Our price is fixed and shown before you book, and it is the same day and night.
  • Arrival stress. Our driver waits inside the international arrivals hall, right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight and include free waiting time, so a delay does not cost you more.
  • Payment. There is no prepayment: you pay the driver on arrival in cash, in EUR, USD or TRY. Tolls, parking and fuel are included.

Questions travellers ask

How much is a taxi from Istanbul Airport to the city centre?

As of October 2026, a yellow taxi from IST to Sultanahmet costs roughly ₺2,250–2,700 on the meter and to Taksim roughly ₺2,000–2,400, depending on traffic. These are our estimates from the official tariff and exclude any tolls. Black taxis cost 70% more.

Is there a night tariff for taxis in Istanbul?

No. Istanbul Airport's official taxi page says fares are valid 24 hours a day, and the 2026 tariff has no night surcharge. The meter rate is the same at 3am as at 3pm.

Where is the taxi stand at Istanbul Airport?

On the arrivals floor, outside Exit Gates 9 and 13. Queue managers send you to the next available taxi in the class you choose. Taxis also wait on the departures floor (2nd floor).

What is the difference between yellow, turquoise and black taxis?

They are price and size classes. Yellow is the standard sedan; turquoise is a larger class costing 15% more; black is the luxury class costing 70% more, usually a larger vehicle with more luggage space.

Do Istanbul taxis accept credit cards?

Since a February 2026 national rule, taxis must have a fiscal device that accepts cards, with a 1 September 2026 deadline for existing taxis. Many do take cards now, but ask before you get in and keep some lira as a backup.

How can I avoid taxi scams in Istanbul?

Make sure the meter is running from the start, follow the route on your phone, count banknotes as you hand them over, and photograph the licence plate. Complaints can be made to the municipal line, 153.

Do you tip taxi drivers in Istanbul?

Tipping is not expected. Most people round up to a convenient amount, and a little extra for help with heavy bags is appreciated but optional.

Is a private transfer cheaper than a taxi from Istanbul Airport?

For one or two people with light luggage, a yellow taxi is usually cheaper. For families or groups, a fixed-price Mercedes Vito for up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases is often comparable to a black taxi or two yellow taxis, with tolls included and no meter running in traffic.
