The M11 is the metro line that serves Istanbul Airport (IST). It is fast, cheap and avoids the motorway traffic, which is why it comes up in almost every forum thread about getting into the city. It also has one catch that travellers often discover only on the platform: it does not go to the old city or Taksim directly. You will change trains at least once, and usually twice for Sultanahmet.
This guide explains the route, the changes for the main districts, fares, hours and what the trip is like with luggage, all as of October 2026. If you are still choosing between the metro, the bus, a taxi and a private car, our Istanbul Airport guide compares every option.
Where does the M11 go?
The M11 runs north–south across the European side. From the airport it has two branches of the same line:
- Towards Gayrettepe (south-east): via Kâğıthane to Gayrettepe, in the business district near Şişli and Levent. This is the direction most visitors need. The Ministry of Transport gives the airport–Gayrettepe trip as about 27 minutes.
- Towards Halkalı (south-west): via Kayaşehir and Olimpiyatköy to Halkalı, where you can join the Marmaray suburban line. This section opened on 20 June 2026; the Ministry gives the airport–Halkalı trip as about 30 minutes.
The line is operated by TCDD Taşımacılık, the state railway company, on behalf of the Ministry of Transport, not by Metro İstanbul, which runs most of the city's other lines. In practice that only matters for fares, which are set differently (see below). Trains are fast by metro standards, with a design speed of 120 km/h.
| Change at | For | Change to |
|---|---|---|
| Gayrettepe | Taksim, Şişhane (Galata), Vezneciler (for Sultanahmet), Yenikapı | M2 metro |
| Gayrettepe | Metrobüs (Zincirlikuyu stop, a short walk) | Metrobüs |
| Kâğıthane | Kâğıthane, Mecidiyeköy area | M7 metro (short walk) |
| Kayaşehir / Olimpiyatköy | Western suburbs | M3 / M9 metro |
| Halkalı | Marmaray to Sirkeci, Üsküdar and the Asian side | Marmaray |
Finding the metro station at IST
After customs, follow the Metro signs from the arrivals floor. The İstanbul Havalimanı station is underground, a few hundred metres from the terminal building (Turkish Wikipedia gives about 280 m), and the route is signposted in English. The airport lists a money exchange office, free toilets and a few cafés in the metro area.
There is also a Terminal 2 station on the line, but it is not in service, so the airport station is the one you want. Ignore older guides that say the line ends at Kâğıthane; it has run through to Gayrettepe since January 2024.
How to pay: Istanbulkart and fares
You pay with an Istanbulkart, the city's contactless transport card. Machines in the airport metro station sell the card and top it up; they take Turkish lira notes, and many also take bank cards. As of October 2026 the anonymous card costs ₺165, according to the official Istanbulkart site, and that is for the card only, without credit. One card can pay for two or more people: tap once for each person.
Unlike most Istanbul metro lines, which charge a flat fare, the M11 charges by the number of stations you travel. The tariff introduced with the Halkalı extension on 20 June 2026 runs from ₺34.00 for 1–3 stations to ₺60.35 for 13–14 stations (full fare). On that table the airport to Gayrettepe falls in the ₺38–44 range, depending on how the stations are counted. We could not find the tariff on an official TCDD page, so check the amount the gate deducts.
Each change of line is a new tap. For comparison, a standard full fare on Metro İstanbul lines such as the M2 is ₺46.20 (as of October 2026), and the Istanbulkart gives reduced fares on many transfers. Our Istanbul public transport guide explains the card in more detail.
| Trip | Fare guide (Istanbulkart, as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Istanbulkart (card only) | ₺165 |
| M11: airport → Gayrettepe | about ₺38–44 |
| M2 or T1: one ride | ₺46.20 full fare, less on transfers |
| Airport → Taksim (M11 + M2) | under ₺100, plus the card |
| Airport → Sultanahmet (M11 + M2 + T1) | under ₺150, plus the card |
Hours and frequency
According to figures the Ministry of Transport released in September 2026, M11 trains run from about 06:00 to 23:45 towards Halkalı and from about 05:55 to 23:55 towards Gayrettepe, every 15 minutes. A 2025 report mentioned round-the-clock running, but the current published hours do not include a night service, so plan on no trains between roughly midnight and 06:00.
Two practical consequences. First, a 15-minute interval means you can wait a while on the platform; it is not a turn-up-and-go metro. Second, the connecting lines also stop around midnight, so even if you catch the last M11 you may miss the last M2 or tram. If you land late in the evening, read our late-night arrival guide first.

Step by step: M11 to Taksim, Sultanahmet, Galata and Kadıköy
To Taksim (one change, around 1h–1h15)
- Take the M11 towards Gayrettepe to the end of the line.
- Follow the signs for the M2 and take a train towards Yenikapı.
- Ride three stops (Şişli-Mecidiyeköy, Osmanbey, Taksim) and come up on Taksim Square.
To Galata and Karaköy (one change)
As above, but stay on the M2 one stop past Taksim to Şişhane. The Galata Tower is a downhill walk of about ten minutes, on cobbles.
To Sultanahmet (two changes, around 1h30–1h45)
- M11 to Gayrettepe, then the M2 towards Yenikapı.
- Get off at Vezneciler and walk about ten minutes to the Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı tram stop.
- Take the T1 tram two stops to Sultanahmet.
Since June 2026 there is a second way: M11 to Halkalı, then the Marmaray east along the coast to Sirkeci, and a short tram ride or uphill walk to Sultanahmet. It needs only one change before the tram, but the Marmaray section is long, and we have not seen a reliable door-to-door time for it yet. For most visitors the Gayrettepe route remains the simpler one. Our Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet guide compares it with the bus and taxi.
To Kadıköy and the Asian side
Take the M11 to Gayrettepe and the M2 to Yenikapı, or the M11 to Halkalı, then the Marmaray under the Bosphorus to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and the M4 metro one stop to Kadıköy. It works, but with three lines and a long journey it is hard going with luggage. If you are flying into Sabiha Gökçen instead, that airport is much closer to Kadıköy: see our Sabiha Gökçen airport guide.
Is the metro OK with luggage?
This is the question travellers ask most, and the honest answer is: it depends on how much you carry. The M11 itself is easy. It starts at the airport, so you board an empty train and can usually find space for a suitcase. The difficulty is the changes.
- Gayrettepe is a long transfer. Travellers on forums describe the walk from the M11 to the M2 as taking up to 15 minutes, with several escalators; some found it smooth with a wheeled case and lifts, others found it tiring with a checked bag and a carry-on.
- The M2 gets crowded. At rush hour (roughly 07:30–09:30 and 17:00–19:30 on weekdays) trains between Şişli and Taksim can be packed, which is awkward with large cases.
- The last stretch is on foot. Sultanahmet hotels are mostly a walk from the tram over cobbles and slopes. Galata from Şişhane is downhill on cobbles.
Our rule of thumb: one carry-on or a backpack per person, in daylight, outside rush hour — the metro is a good choice. With large suitcases, small children, a pushchair, or after a long-haul flight, door-to-door is usually worth it. Travelling with little ones? See our guide to child seats and transfers with kids.

Our own service is the opposite of the metro in almost every way: one vehicle for up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases, a fixed price per vehicle with tolls included, and a driver waiting inside the arrivals hall with your name on a sign (see where to meet your driver). You pay the driver on arrival in cash (EUR, USD or TRY), and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm, TÜRSAB licence 10138. Fixed prices from IST: Taksim $65 / $75, Sultanahmet $70 / $80, Galata $65 / $75.
Heavy bags or a late flight? Fixed price to Sultanahmet, driver inside arrivals, pay on arrival.
