Istanbul Airport (IST) is one very large terminal, and after a long flight it can feel like a lot of walking before you see a familiar face. The good news is that the route from the aircraft to the arrivals hall is linear: every international passenger follows the same sequence of passport control, baggage claim and customs. Once you know the order, finding your driver is simple.
This guide walks through that sequence at Istanbul Airport and at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, explains where private drivers wait, and covers the practical details: Wi-Fi, SIM cards, lost luggage and how long it all usually takes.
Before you land: three things to have ready
- Your entry document. Many nationalities can enter Türkiye visa-free for short stays, others need an e-Visa, and the rules change from time to time. Check your own nationality on the official e-Visa site before you fly, and apply there only — not through look-alike sites.
- Your driver's contact details. Save the WhatsApp number from your booking confirmation (ours is +90 507 055 44 36) so you can message without searching your inbox in the arrivals hall.
- A way to get online. An eSIM installed before departure is the easiest option. Airport Wi-Fi works too, but it takes a minute to log in (details below).
Istanbul Airport (IST): from the aircraft to the arrivals hall
- Follow the "Arrivals / Passport Control" signs. Depending on your gate this can be a long walk with moving walkways. If you arrive at a remote stand, a bus brings you to the terminal.
- Passport control. Join the queue for foreign passport holders and have your passport (and e-Visa, if you need one) open. The airport lists e-passport control points as well as staffed counters; follow the signs and staff directions for which queue applies to you.
- Baggage claim. Check the screens for your flight's belt number. Trolleys are available in the hall. If a bag doesn't arrive, report it here — see the lost luggage section below — before you go through customs.
- Customs. Most visitors with nothing to declare walk straight through the green channel. Bags may be passed through an X-ray machine on the way out.
- Exit into the international arrivals hall. You come out of the baggage and customs area into the public arrivals hall, where people waiting for passengers stand along the barrier.
- Look for your name. Private drivers meet guests right here, at the exit of the baggage area, holding name signs.
How our driver meets you at IST: your driver waits inside the international arrivals hall, right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, holding a sign with your name. They track your flight, so an early or late landing is no problem, and waiting time is free. From there they help with your bags and walk you to the Mercedes Vito.

Domestic arrivals at IST
Domestic flights (for example from Antalya, Izmir or Cappadocia) use a separate domestic arrivals area with no passport control or customs, and the exit is in a different place from the international one. If you're connecting from another Turkish city, tell us the flight number when you book so the driver waits at the right exit. A domestic arrival is usually noticeably quicker to walk out of.
Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): the same steps, on a smaller scale
Sabiha Gökçen, on the Asian side, is smaller than IST, so distances are shorter. It is a busy airport, especially for Pegasus flights, and queues can still build up at peak times.
- Follow the signs to passport control and join the queue for foreign passports, with your entry document ready.
- Collect your bags from the belt shown on the screens in the international baggage hall.
- Pass through customs — the green channel if you have nothing to declare.
- Exit the international baggage area into the arrivals hall. This is where meet-and-greet drivers wait.
How our driver meets you at SAW: your driver waits in the arrivals hall at the exit of the international baggage area, with your name on a sign. Flight tracking and free waiting time apply here too. For onward routes, see Sabiha Gökçen to the city centre.
How long from landing to the arrivals hall?
There is no official figure, and it depends mainly on how many flights land at the same time. As a rough guide, many travellers are through in about 30 to 60 minutes after an international landing, and it can take longer when several wide-body flights arrive together or bags are slow. Domestic arrivals are usually quicker because there is no passport control.
| Stage | What affects it | Typical experience |
|---|---|---|
| Walk from gate (IST) | Gate location; remote stand bus | Can be long at IST; shorter at SAW |
| Passport control | Number of flights landing together | Quick at quiet times, slower at peaks |
| Baggage claim | Aircraft size, ground handling | Often the longest wait |
| Customs | Random bag checks | Usually a short walk-through |
| Total, international | All of the above | Usually under an hour; longer at peak times |
| Total, domestic | Walk and baggage only | Usually shorter than international |
Because our drivers track your flight, you don't need to rush or message us from the plane. Take your time at baggage claim; the driver will be there.
Can't find your driver? Do this
- Stay where you are at the exit of the baggage area. Walking around the hall makes it harder for the driver to find you.
- Get online. At IST, the free iGA WiFi network lets you log in either with an SMS code to your phone or by scanning your passport at a kiosk in the terminal to get an access code. Turkish Airlines passengers can also use TK WiFi. At SAW, the airport directs passengers to its "Free Wi-Fi" network.
- Message or call us on WhatsApp at +90 507 055 44 36. We answer 24/7. Send a short note with your name and, if possible, a photo of the nearest exit number or sign.
- Check before you get in. Your driver will know your name and destination. Don't accept rides from people who approach you in the hall offering a taxi or a "transfer" — only go with the driver holding your name sign or the one we confirm on WhatsApp.
Lost or delayed luggage
If your bag doesn't appear on the belt, report it before you leave the baggage hall. Delayed baggage is handled by your airline or its ground handling agent at the baggage service desks in the claim area. Keep your baggage tag (usually stuck to your boarding pass or passport) and ask for a written file reference.
Send us a WhatsApp message if this happens — the driver will keep waiting while you file the report. Items lost inside the terminal (not on the aircraft) go to the airport's own Lost and Found office; IST lists a 24/7 call centre on 444 1 442.
What happens after you meet the driver
Istanbul VIP, operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138), uses private Mercedes Vito and VIP Mercedes Vito vehicles for up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases. The price is per vehicle, not per person, and you see the fixed price before booking. It's the same day and night, and tolls, parking and fuel are included.
- No prepayment: you pay the driver on arrival in cash (EUR, USD or TRY).
- Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the transfer.
- Free child seat on request — mention it when you book.
- From IST to Sultanahmet the Private Vito is $70 and the VIP Vito is $80, one way per vehicle. See the Sultanahmet guide or the Taksim guide for the drive itself.
