Sultanahmet is where most first-time visitors stay: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all within a few minutes' walk of each other. Istanbul Airport (IST), however, is about 45 km away on the far north-west edge of the city, so the trip in takes planning, especially after a long flight.
There are five realistic ways to make the journey: a pre-booked private transfer, a metered taxi, a taxi booked through Uber, the Havaist airport bus, and the metro with one or two changes. Below is what each costs as of October 2026, how long it takes, and where each one actually leaves you.
Your options compared
The table assumes two adults with a large suitcase each, arriving in the daytime. Taxi figures are estimates calculated from the official Istanbul tariff, not quotes; public transport fares are per person.
| Option | Cost for 2 people (as of Oct 2026) | Door to door | Leaves you at | Runs at 3am? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private transfer (our Private Vito) | $70 per vehicle, fixed | 45–70 min | Your hotel | Yes, same price |
| Yellow taxi (metered) | about ₺2,250–2,700 | 45–75 min | Your hotel | Yes |
| Turquoise taxi (metered, +15%) | about ₺2,550–3,100 | 45–75 min | Your hotel | Yes |
| Uber (books an airport taxi) | app estimate; IST average ₺2,625 | 45–75 min | Your hotel | Yes |
| Havaist bus, Sultanahmet line | ₺940 (₺470 each) | often 90 min or more | Çatladıkapı, below Sultanahmet | Check timetable |
| Metro M11 + M2 + tram T1 | under ₺300, plus card | around 1h30–1h45 | Sultanahmet tram stop | No |

Each option in detail
Private transfer
This is our service. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138). You book a private Mercedes Vito or VIP Mercedes Vito, which takes up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases, and the price is per vehicle, not per person: $70 for the Private Vito and $80 for the VIP Vito from IST to Sultanahmet, one way. If your hotel is elsewhere in the Old City, around the Grand Bazaar, Laleli or Beyazıt, see the Istanbul Airport to Fatih route, which is $65 / $75.
The fixed price is shown before you book and includes tolls, parking and fuel; it is the same day and night. There is no prepayment: you pay the driver on arrival in cash, in euros, US dollars or Turkish lira. Your driver waits inside the international arrivals hall, right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight and waiting time is free, so a delay does not cost you extra. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, a child seat is free on request, and there is bottled water and phone chargers in the car.
Full route details are on the Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet transfer page, and our meeting point guide shows exactly where the driver stands.
Metered taxi: yellow, turquoise or black
Taxis wait 24 hours a day on the arrivals floor at Exit Gates 9 and 13, according to the airport. They are all metered at the tariff set by the city. Since 20 July 2026 a standard yellow taxi charges an opening fee of ₺71.94 plus ₺47.92 per km, and the meter adds a time charge when the car is crawling in traffic. Turquoise taxis cost 15% more and black taxis 70% more than yellow ones.
For the roughly 45 km to Sultanahmet that works out at about ₺2,250–2,700 in a yellow taxi and about ₺3,800–4,550 in a black one (our estimate, as of October 2026). Yellow taxis are usually compact sedans: two people with two large cases fit, but a family with more luggage will want a turquoise or black taxi. Tolls are not in the meter and are added if the driver uses a toll road. Card acceptance has improved in 2026 but is not guaranteed, so carry some lira. Our Istanbul Airport taxi fares guide covers the tariff and common tricks in more detail.
Uber at Istanbul Airport
Uber in Istanbul books licensed taxis, not private cars. Uber's own IST page says to request the ride after you clear arrivals, walk to the taxi line outside Exit Door 9 or 13, take the first taxi in the queue and give the driver the 6-digit PIN from the app. You can choose Yellow Taxi or the larger Black Taxi. The fare is still based on the taxi tariff; Uber lists an average of ₺2,625 for rides from IST lasting about 42 minutes (as of October 2026). The main advantages are an estimate up front and an in-app record of the trip. More in our Uber at Istanbul Airport guide.
Havaist bus: the Sultanahmet line is back, on a new route
Older guides describe the HVIST-11 Sultanahmet bus. That line was suspended and returned in May 2026 on an updated route. According to Havaist, it now runs Istanbul Airport – Miniatürk – Hasköy Park – Türabi Baba Park – Şişhane – Sirkeci/Eminönü – Çatladıkapı (Sultanahmet). The fare given in Havaist's May 2026 notice is ₺470 per person; its English post from July 2026 lists €8. Pay on board by Istanbulkart or bank card, or buy in the Havaist app. Cash is not accepted.
Buses leave from the transportation floor (-2) of the terminal. Havaist does not publish a fixed frequency for this line, so check departure times in the Havaist app before you land. The last stop, Çatladıkapı, is on the coastal road below Sultanahmet, opposite the Çatladıkapı marriage hall. From there it is an uphill walk with luggage into the hotel streets, or a short taxi ride.
Metro M11 + M2 + tram T1
The cheapest route, but it involves two changes and stairs or escalators with bags. Take the M11 from the airport station to its end at Gayrettepe. Change to the M2 towards Yenikapı and ride to Vezneciler. Walk about 10 minutes to the Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı stop of the T1 tram and ride two stops to Sultanahmet. Since June 2026 the M11 also continues to Halkalı for the Marmaray line to Sirkeci, but for most visitors the Gayrettepe route is simpler.
Pay with an Istanbulkart, sold at machines in the airport metro station. One card can pay for two people: tap once for each person. The M11 charges by the number of stations travelled; on its June 2026 tariff the airport to Gayrettepe costs about ₺38–44. A standard full fare on the city's metro and tram lines is ₺46.20 (as of October 2026), with reduced fares for transfers. M11 trains run roughly every 15 minutes from about 06:00 until around midnight, so this option is out for very late arrivals.
Night arrivals and getting to your hotel door
Plenty of flights land at IST in the small hours. At 3am the metro is closed and Havaist departures on the Sultanahmet line are limited, so in practice your options are a taxi, Uber or a pre-booked transfer. Taxis have no night tariff in Istanbul, and our transfer price is the same day and night.
Sultanahmet itself takes some local knowledge. The area around Sultanahmet Square and the Hippodrome is largely closed to cars, the T1 tram runs along Divanyolu, and many small hotels sit on narrow, one-way or cobbled lanes in Cankurtaran and Küçük Ayasofya. A car can reach most hotel doors, but a few are on stepped or pedestrian lanes where any vehicle, taxi or transfer, has to stop at the nearest corner.
Going back: Sultanahmet to the airport
For an international flight, plan to be at IST around three hours before departure; Uber's IST page gives the same advice. With 45–70 minutes on the road and morning or evening rush hour on top, leaving Sultanahmet about four hours before take-off is a sensible margin. The Sultanahmet to Istanbul Airport transfer is priced the same way, per vehicle and fixed.
