Taksim Square is the hub of Beyoğlu, the part of Istanbul north of the Golden Horn where many visitors stay for the restaurants, nightlife and İstiklal Avenue. Galata, with its tower and steep lanes, is a 20-minute walk downhill. Istanbul Airport (IST) is about 40 km to the north-west.
Taksim is the easiest central district to reach from IST by public transport: the metro gets you to Taksim Square with a single change, and Havaist runs buses directly to Taksim. Below is what each option costs as of October 2026, how long it takes and where it leaves you.
Your options compared
The table assumes two adults with a large suitcase each, arriving in the daytime. Taxi figures are estimates calculated from the official Istanbul tariff, not quotes; public transport fares are per person.
| Option | Cost for 2 people (as of Oct 2026) | Door to door | Leaves you at | Runs at 3am? |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Each option in detail
Private transfer
This is our service. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138). You book a private Mercedes Vito or VIP Mercedes Vito, which takes up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases, and the price is per vehicle, not per person: $65 for the Private Vito and $75 for the VIP Vito from IST to Taksim, one way. The same prices apply to Galata and Karaköy and to Beşiktaş.
The fixed price is shown before you book and includes tolls, parking and fuel; it is the same day and night. There is no prepayment: you pay the driver on arrival in cash, in euros, US dollars or Turkish lira. Your driver waits inside the international arrivals hall, right after customs at the exit of the baggage area, holding a sign with your name. We track your flight and waiting time is free. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup, a child seat is free on request, and there is bottled water and phone chargers in the car.
Route details are on the Istanbul Airport to Taksim transfer page, and our meeting point guide shows where the driver stands.
Metered taxi: yellow, turquoise or black
According to the airport, taxis wait 24 hours a day on the arrivals floor at Exit Gates 9 and 13. All are metered at the city tariff. Since 20 July 2026 a standard yellow taxi charges an opening fee of ₺71.94 plus ₺47.92 per km, plus a time charge when the car is crawling in traffic. Turquoise taxis cost 15% more and black taxis 70% more than yellow ones.
For the roughly 40 km to Taksim that comes to about ₺2,000–2,400 in a yellow taxi and about ₺3,400–4,050 in a black one (our estimate, as of October 2026). Galata is a little further, about ₺2,100–2,500 by yellow taxi. Yellow taxis are usually compact sedans, so larger groups or families with lots of luggage will want a turquoise or black taxi. Tolls are added on top of the meter if the driver uses a toll road. Card acceptance has improved in 2026 but is not guaranteed, so carry some lira. See our Istanbul Airport taxi fares guide for the full tariff.
Uber at Istanbul Airport
Uber in Istanbul books licensed taxis rather than private cars. Uber's IST page says to request the ride once you have cleared arrivals, go to the taxi line outside Exit Door 9 or 13, take the first taxi in the queue and give the driver the 6-digit PIN from the app. You can choose Yellow Taxi or the larger Black Taxi. The price still follows the taxi tariff; Uber lists an average of ₺2,625 for rides from IST lasting about 42 minutes (as of October 2026). Details in our Uber at Istanbul Airport guide.
Havaist bus to Taksim
Havaist buses leave from the transportation floor (-2) of the terminal. The airport describes two Taksim services: an express line that stops only at Nurtepe Viyadük and Piyalepaşa before Taksim Square, and a line that runs via 4. Levent, Zincirlikuyu and Beşiktaş before continuing to Taksim, which is handy if you are staying in Beşiktaş. The Taksim stop is on Taksim Square itself.
We could not confirm the current Taksim fare from Havaist directly. A third-party guide lists about ₺470 per person for 2026, the same as the fare Havaist published for its Sultanahmet line in May 2026. The Havaist app shows the live price. Pay on board with an Istanbulkart or bank card, or buy in the app; cash is not accepted. Allow around 90 minutes, longer at rush hour.
Metro M11 + M2
This is the simplest metro trip from the airport to any central district. Take the M11 from the airport station to its terminus at Gayrettepe, change to the M2 towards Yenikapı and ride three stops (Şişli-Mecidiyeköy, Osmanbey) to Taksim, where the station exits onto the square. For Galata, stay on one more stop to Şişhane; the tower is a short walk downhill. For Beşiktaş there is no direct metro, so the Havaist Beşiktaş line or a taxi is easier.
Pay with an Istanbulkart, sold at machines in the airport metro station; one card can cover two people if you tap once for each. The M11 charges by the number of stations travelled, and on its June 2026 tariff the airport to Gayrettepe costs about ₺38–44. A standard full fare on the M2 is ₺46.20 (as of October 2026), with reduced fares for transfers. M11 trains run roughly every 15 minutes from about 06:00 until around midnight.
Night arrivals and the drop-off in Beyoğlu
At 3am the metro is closed and Havaist runs only a limited timetable, so the realistic choices are a taxi, Uber or a pre-booked transfer. Taxis have no night tariff in Istanbul, and our transfer price is the same day and night.
Know what to expect at the other end. İstiklal Avenue is pedestrian-only, and a lot of hotels sit on its side streets, so cars drop you on the nearest street they can enter, sometimes a short walk from the door. Around Galata Tower the lanes are steep, narrow and cobbled, with some stepped sections. Cihangir and Karaköy are reachable by car but busy in the evening. Taksim Square itself is largely pedestrianised, with traffic routed around and under it.

For the flight home, aim to be at IST about three hours before an international departure, which from Taksim usually means leaving around four hours before take-off.
