Istanbul's sights are spread over two continents, seven hills and a long stretch of the Bosphorus. The old city is compact, but the palaces, waterfront villages, viewpoints and the Asian side are not, and the traffic in between can eat a day. That is why many visitors, especially families and small groups, ask the same question on travel forums: is it worth hiring a car with a driver for a day?
This guide explains how hiring a private driver works, what it costs with us as of October 2026, when it makes sense and when it does not, and three sample days you can copy or adapt.
How hiring a driver by the hour works
A driver by the hour (sometimes called a chauffeur service or "car at disposal") is different from a transfer. Instead of one trip from A to B, you book the car and driver for a block of time. The driver takes you from place to place, waits while you visit, and keeps your bags or shopping in the car.
- Choose the hours. With us the minimum is 3 hours. Most sightseeing days are 5 to 8 hours.
- Choose the pickup point. Your hotel, an address, Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) or the Galataport cruise terminal.
- Share a rough plan. A list of places is enough. The driver knows where cars can stop and suggests a sensible order around traffic and closing days.
- Change it on the day. Within your booked hours you can add, drop or reorder stops. If you want to stay longer, extra time is charged at the same hourly rate.
- Pay at the end. No prepayment: you pay the driver in cash in EUR, USD or TRY. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
How much does a private driver cost in Istanbul?
Our hourly chauffeur service is priced per vehicle, not per person, for up to 6 passengers and up to 12 suitcases. A Private Mercedes Vito costs $40 per hour and a VIP Mercedes Vito $55 per hour, with a minimum of 3 hours. Tolls and parking are included unless your booking confirmation says otherwise.
| Hours | Private Mercedes Vito | VIP Mercedes Vito | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 hours (minimum) | $120 | $165 | One area, e.g. the Bosphorus shore or Çamlıca and Üsküdar |
| 4 hours | $160 | $220 | A half day, or sightseeing on the way to the airport |
| 6 hours | $240 | $330 | A full sightseeing day at a relaxed pace |
| 8 hours | $320 | $440 | A long day linking both sides of the Bosphorus |
| 10 hours | $400 | $550 | Early start to late dinner |
Because the price is for the whole vehicle, it gets cheaper per person as more of you share. Four people with a Private Vito for 6 hours pay $240 in total, or $60 each. Trips outside Istanbul, such as Bursa or Sapanca, are priced as a fixed day rate agreed in advance on WhatsApp rather than by the hour.
Choose "Hourly", set your pickup point and hours, and see the price before you book.
Is a private driver worth it in Istanbul?
Honestly, not always. If your day is Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar, you do not need a car: they are a few minutes' walk apart, and the T1 tram links Sultanahmet with Karaköy and Kabataş. Much of Sultanahmet is pedestrianised, so a car cannot take you from door to door there anyway.
A driver starts to pay off when your day leaves the tram line or when walking and changing transport is hard work:
- Spread-out sights. Dolmabahçe, Ortaköy, Bebek, Rumeli Fortress, Balat, Eyüp and Çamlıca Hill are poorly linked to each other by public transport.
- Both sides of the Bosphorus in one day. The car crosses a bridge in minutes outside rush hour, with no ferry timetable to follow.
- Families and older travellers. Strollers, naps and tired legs are easier with a car that waits for you. Child seats are free on request.
- Groups of four to six. One van for the day is often simpler than hailing two taxis at every stop.
- Checkout day with a late flight. Your luggage stays in the car while you see the city, and the day ends at the airport.
- Rain, heat or a short stay. When you only have one day, waiting for taxis or squeezing onto trams costs time you do not have.
| Option | How you pay | Waits for you | Luggage and shopping | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tram, metro and ferry | Per ride with an Istanbulkart | No | Carry it yourself | Old city and Karaköy, light travellers |
| Taxis between sights | Meter per trip | No | Boot space varies | One or two hops in a day |
| Driver by the hour | Per hour, per vehicle | Yes | Stays in the car | Spread-out days, families, groups |
| Private tour with a licensed guide | Per tour | Yes | Usually in the car | Commentary inside the sites |

Driver or guide? What a driver does and does not do
A common question is whether the driver will also explain the sights. In Türkiye, tourist guiding is a licensed profession under the Tourist Guiding Profession Law (No. 6326): guides need a ministry licence and a valid working card to guide. A driver's job is to drive, wait, suggest timings and know where to drop you and pick you up. Commentary inside Hagia Sophia or Topkapı Palace is a licensed guide's job.
If you want both, a simple approach is to book a licensed guide for the one or two places where a story matters most, such as Topkapı or Hagia Sophia, and keep the driver for the rest of the day. We also arrange private Istanbul tours built around your list of places.
Three sample days with a driver
1. Old city, Balat and the Golden Horn (about 6 hours)
- Morning in Sultanahmet on foot: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome. The driver drops you at the nearest point cars can stop and waits nearby.
- Midday: the Grand Bazaar (closed on Sundays) or Süleymaniye Mosque and lunch nearby.
- Afternoon by car: the colourful streets of Balat and Fener, then up to Pierre Loti above Eyüp for the view over the Golden Horn before heading back.
2. Bosphorus shore and the Asian side (about 6 hours)
- Morning: Dolmabahçe Palace when it opens.
- Late morning: along the shore road to Ortaköy and Bebek for a walk and coffee, then Rumeli Fortress.
- Afternoon: across the bridge to the Asian side, up Çamlıca Hill for the view, and finish in Üsküdar or Kadıköy and Moda. Dolmabahçe and Rumeli Fortress are both closed on Mondays, so pick another day for this route.
3. Checkout day with a late flight (4 to 6 hours)
- The driver collects you and your luggage at the hotel after checkout.
- Spend the day on the places you missed: the Spice Bazaar for last-minute shopping, a Bosphorus viewpoint, a long lunch.
- End at the departures floor of Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen. Count the drive time inside your booked hours and leave a generous margin for check-in.

Practical tips for the day
- Avoid the worst traffic. Roughly 07:00–09:30 and 17:00–20:00 on weekdays, bridge crossings and the shore road are slowest. Start early or plan the Asian side for midday.
- Agree on pickup points. In the old city and Beyoğlu, cars can only stop in certain places. Agree where you will meet before you walk off, and keep the driver's number on WhatsApp.
- Dress for mosques. Shoulders and knees covered, and a scarf for women. Keep one in the car.
- Valuables stay with you. Shopping and luggage can stay in the car; passports, phones and wallets should not.
- Children. Tell us the ages when you book and we bring child seats free of charge. See our guide to child seats on Istanbul transfers.
- Language. Tell us when booking if you need a driver who speaks a particular language, and we will confirm what we can arrange on WhatsApp.
Do you tip a private driver in Istanbul?
Tipping is not expected for a private transfer or a hired car. Turkey Travel Planner suggests that 5–10% of the fare is appropriate if the service was exceptional. On a long day, many visitors simply round up or leave a little extra in cash. It is entirely your choice.
Day trips outside Istanbul
The same car and driver can take you beyond the city for a day. Popular choices are Bursa, the lakes and forest of Sapanca, the Black Sea beaches of Şile and Ağva and the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne. These are priced as a fixed day rate for the vehicle, agreed in advance on WhatsApp.
