Edirne sits in the far north-west of Turkey, a few kilometres from the Greek and Bulgarian borders. For almost a century before the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 it was the Ottoman capital, and it still has some of the finest Ottoman buildings anywhere, above all the Selimiye Mosque, which the architect Sinan considered his masterpiece. It is quieter than Istanbul, easy to walk around, and known across Turkey for its fried liver and almond paste.
This guide covers how long the journey takes, every way to get there, a timed itinerary and what to eat. Times and fares are as of October 2026, with sources at the end.
Is Edirne worth a day trip from Istanbul?
Yes, if you are interested in Ottoman architecture and are happy with a long day. Edirne is about 240 km from central Istanbul, so you spend around five to six hours on the road in total. In return you get a UNESCO World Heritage mosque without Istanbul's crowds, a compact historic centre and a very different feel from the big city.
- Selimiye Mosque and its complex (1568–1575), inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011, freshly restored and fully reopened in 2026.
- Two earlier imperial mosques, the Eski Camii (Old Mosque) and the Üç Şerefeli Mosque, both a few minutes' walk from Selimiye.
- Historic bazaars: the Selimiye Arasta below the mosque, the Ali Paşa Bazaar and the Bedesten.
- The Sultan Bayezid II Complex, home to a museum on Ottoman medicine in a 15th-century hospital.
- Stone bridges over the Tunca and Meriç rivers, best at sunset.
Plan Edirne in one day with a driver: tell us your hotel and date
Distance and drive time
From Sultanahmet or Taksim to the centre of Edirne is about 240 km by road, almost all of it on the O-3 motorway towards the Bulgarian border. With clear roads the drive takes around 2 hours 30 minutes; allow about 3 hours each way with Istanbul's traffic. From Istanbul Airport (IST) it is about 230 km. The motorway is tolled.
The slow part is getting out of and back into Istanbul. Leaving the city before 08:00 and starting back before 17:00 makes the biggest difference, especially on Fridays and Sunday evenings.
All the ways to get from Istanbul to Edirne
Private car with driver
A car is the simplest way to do Edirne in a day. The main sights are in the centre, but the Bayezid II Complex and the Meriç Bridge are 2–3 km away, and the bus and train stations are outside the old town. With a driver you go door to door from your hotel, stop where you like and do not need to watch the clock for the last train or bus.
Fast train via Çerkezköy (new in October 2026)
The first section of the new Halkalı–Kapıkule high-speed railway, between Çerkezköy and Edirne, opened on 9 October 2026, with the first passenger trains the next day. According to the Ministry of Transport, as reported by Anadolu Agency, there are three fast trains a day in each direction and the trip takes about 54 minutes. The section between Halkalı (Istanbul) and Çerkezköy is still being built, so for now you take a regional train from Halkalı and change at Çerkezköy.
| Leg | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Halkalı → Çerkezköy (regional train) | 08:25 | 10:23 |
| Çerkezköy → Edirne (fast train) | 10:45 / 15:00 / 19:30 | 11:40 / 15:55 / 20:25 |
| Edirne → Çerkezköy (fast train) | 09:00 / 13:00 / 17:45 | 09:58 / 13:58 / 18:43 |
| Çerkezköy → Halkalı (regional train) | 18:50 | 21:00 |
That gives a workable day trip: out on the 08:25 from Halkalı, about six hours in Edirne, and back on the 17:45. The change at Çerkezköy is about 22 minutes going out and only 7 minutes coming back, and we could not find an official statement that the trains are timed to connect. The standard fare for Çerkezköy–Edirne was reported at 310 TL one way (Edirne Ahval, October 2026). We could not confirm the Halkalı–Çerkezköy regional fare. Tickets are sold on TCDD's e-bilet site and app.
Halkalı itself is on the Marmaray line, about 35 minutes from Sirkeci, so allow time to get there for 08:25. Edirne's railway station is outside the historic centre; take a taxi or local bus to Selimiye.
Intercity bus
Buses run from Esenler, Alibeyköy, Büyükçekmece (Beylikdüzü), Dudullu and other Istanbul terminals to Edirne bus station. In late October 2026, booking sites listed most fares at 400–600 TL one way, with journey times averaging about 3 hours 30 minutes. Edirne's bus station is on the edge of town, so add a short taxi or bus ride to the centre.
Travel options compared
| Option | Time each way | Cost | Flexibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car with driver | About 3 h, door to door | Fixed day price for the vehicle, agreed in advance on WhatsApp | High: all sights, your own timing |
| Regional train + fast train | About 3 h 15 min from Halkalı, plus the trip to Halkalı | 310 TL Çerkezköy–Edirne, plus the regional fare | Low: one useful connection each way |
| Intercity bus | About 3 h 30 min, plus transfers to and from the terminals | About 400–600 TL one way (booking sites) | Medium: frequent departures, terminals outside the centre |
Selimiye Mosque after the restoration
Built for Sultan Selim II between 1568 and 1575, Selimiye is the high point of Sinan's career. Its dome is about 31 m across and its four minarets are about 71 m tall, among the tallest of the classical Ottoman period. Inside, the dome rests on eight piers, which leaves the prayer hall remarkably open and full of light.
The General Directorate of Foundations restored the mosque from November 2021, a project of about four and a half years. All sections reopened for worship on 18 February 2026, and the official opening followed on 12 June 2026. If you saw photos of scaffolding inside, that phase is over.
Entry is free. It is a working mosque, so visits pause during the five daily prayers, particularly the Friday midday prayer. Women should cover their hair, everyone should cover shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at the entrance. We could not find official visiting hours for tourists; plan to arrive mid-morning and avoid prayer times.
Around the mosque, the complex includes the Selimiye Arasta, a covered market street along its southern side, and two museums in its former colleges: the Selimiye Foundation Museum and Edirne's Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. We could not confirm their current hours or ticket prices.
More things to do in Edirne
- Eski Camii (Old Mosque). Completed in the early 15th century, with huge calligraphy painted on its walls.
- Üç Şerefeli Mosque. Finished in the 1440s and named after the three balconies on one of its minarets; an important step towards the later Istanbul mosques.
- Ali Paşa Bazaar and the Bedesten. The long Ali Paşa Bazaar, designed by Sinan, and the older Bedesten are where to buy Edirne's fruit-shaped soaps and almond paste.
- Sultan Bayezid II Complex and Health Museum. A 15th-century mosque, hospital and medical school beside the Tunca, now a museum on Ottoman medicine run by Trakya University. It won the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2004. We could not confirm current hours and prices from an official source.
- The bridges. Several Ottoman bridges cross the Tunca, and the 19th-century Meriç Bridge to the south of the centre is the classic sunset spot.
- Karaağaç. Just beyond the Meriç Bridge, with the old railway station (now part of Trakya University) and the Lausanne Monument.
- Sarayiçi and the Edirne Palace. The site of the Ottoman palace is being rebuilt; President Erdoğan said in June 2026 it should open towards the end of 2027.

When to go: seasons and Kırkpınar
- Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times for walking. Edirne has a continental climate, so it is often colder in winter and hotter in summer than Istanbul.
- Kırkpınar oil wrestling, one of the oldest wrestling festivals in the world, is held each summer at Sarayiçi. In 2026 it ran from 3 to 5 July; the town is very busy during those days. Dates for 2027 had not been announced when we checked.
- Fridays: the Selimiye is busy around the midday prayer, so plan your visit for the morning or afternoon.
What to eat and buy
- Tava ciğer: thin slices of calf's liver, fried crisp and served with dried chillies and onion. It is the dish Edirne is known for.
- Badem ezmesi: Edirne's almond paste, sold in the bazaars and sweet shops.
- Meyve sabunu: soaps shaped and coloured like fruit, a traditional Edirne souvenir.
- Cheese from Thrace: the white cheese (beyaz peynir) and kaşar of the region are good to take home.
