Sapanca is where many Istanbul families go when they want a day of fresh air without a flight. The draw is simple: a freshwater lake ringed by forested hills, long breakfasts by the water, trout grilled beside mountain streams in Maşukiye, and in winter, snow at Kartepe. Nothing here needs a ticket or a guide. The pleasure is in slowing down.
This guide explains how long the trip takes, every way to get there, a timed itinerary and what changes with the seasons. Timetables and fares are as of October 2026, with sources listed at the end.
Why go to Sapanca
- Lake Sapanca. The town of Sapanca sits on the lake's southern shore, with a lakeside promenade, tea gardens and piers where you can sit by the water.
- Maşukiye. About 10 km west of Sapanca town by road, in Kocaeli's Kartepe district. Streams run down from the mountain through the village, with small waterfalls and restaurants that serve trout from their own ponds.
- Kartepe. The mountain above Maşukiye. A cable car, in service since 2024, runs about 4.7 km from Derbent to the Kuzuyayla nature park in around 14 minutes. In winter the Kartepe ski centre is one of the closest ski areas to Istanbul.
- Food. Lakeside Turkish breakfast, trout cooked on a clay tile (kiremitte alabalık), and islama köfte, the Sakarya speciality of grilled meatballs served on bread soaked in broth.
Distance and drive time from Istanbul
From Sultanahmet or Taksim to Sapanca town is about 135 km by road, most of it on the O-4 (TEM) motorway towards Ankara after crossing the Bosphorus. With clear roads the drive takes around 1 hour 30 minutes. Allow about 2 hours each way in normal traffic. Tolls apply on the Bosphorus crossing and the motorway.
Traffic is the main variable. On summer weekends and long holidays the eastbound motorway fills up on Saturday mornings and the westbound side on Sunday afternoons. Leaving Istanbul before 08:00 and starting back before the late-afternoon rush makes the biggest difference.
All the ways to get from Istanbul to Sapanca
Private car with driver
Sapanca's highlights are spread around the lake and up the mountain. Maşukiye and the Kartepe cable car are 10–20 minutes' drive from town, and public transport between them is limited. A car with a driver lets you stop for breakfast, lunch and the views in whatever order suits you.
Train: Marmaray and the Ada Express
Sapanca station is served by the Ada Express (Ada Ekspresi), a TCDD regional train between Gebze and Adapazarı with six departures a day in each direction. To use it from central Istanbul, take the Marmaray commuter line to Gebze (about 73 minutes from Sirkeci) and change.
- Gebze to Sapanca: departures at 07:25, 11:00, 13:10, 16:35, 17:40 and 20:50, arriving at Sapanca about 65 minutes later (08:30 for the first train).
- Sapanca to Gebze: departures at 06:27, 10:13, 14:14, 15:47, 18:43 and 21:23, arriving at Gebze about 64 minutes later.
- Fare: from ₺230 according to a timetable site updated in August 2026. We could not confirm the fare on TCDD's own site.
For a day trip, the 07:25 from Gebze and the 15:47 or 18:43 back are the practical choices. The station is in Sapanca town, so you can walk to the lake. Reaching Maşukiye or Kartepe needs a taxi.
High-speed train (YHT) to Arifiye
High-speed trains do not stop at Sapanca station. Some Istanbul–Ankara YHT services stop at Arifiye, about 10 km east of Sapanca town, but not every train does. Third-party timetable sites put Söğütlüçeşme to Arifiye at roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Check which departures stop at Arifiye and the current fare on TCDD's e-bilet site, then take a taxi to Sapanca.
Intercity bus
Buses to Sapanca leave from Harem, Esenler, Alibeyköy, Dudullu and other Istanbul terminals. The journey takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. In late October 2026, booking sites listed most fares at around ₺350–420 one way. Sapanca's bus terminal is about 1 km from the town centre, but some long-distance buses stop at motorway service areas outside town, so check the drop-off point when you book.

A one-day Sapanca itinerary
- 08:00 Pick-up at your Istanbul hotel. Leaving early avoids the worst of the motorway traffic.
- 10:00 Breakfast by the lake. A full Turkish breakfast at one of the lakeside places in or near Sapanca town.
- 11:30 Sapanca promenade. Walk along the shore, take photos from the piers, and have tea in a lakeside garden.
- 12:30 Maşukiye. Drive about 10 km west. Walk beside the streams to the waterfalls, then have trout for lunch at a restaurant with tables over the water.
- 14:30 Kartepe. Ride the cable car from Derbent up to Kuzuyayla for forest walks and mountain views, or in winter drive up to the ski centre to play in the snow.
- 16:30 Back to the lake for a last tea at sunset, or stop for islama köfte on the way out.
- 17:30 Leave for Istanbul and arrive at your hotel around 19:30, depending on traffic.
Seasons: summer weekends and Kartepe snow
- Summer (June–August): The busiest time. Lakeside cafés and Maşukiye's restaurants fill up at weekends, and the motorway is at its slowest.
- Autumn (September–November): A good time to go. The forests around the lake and on Kartepe change colour and the crowds thin out.
- Winter (December–March): Kartepe gets snow and the ski centre opens when there is enough of it. We could not find official 2026–27 season dates, so check before you go. Mountain roads may need winter tyres or chains.
- Spring (April–May): Green hills and full streams in Maşukiye. Showers are common, so bring a rain layer.
We could not verify current ticket prices or hours for the Kartepe cable car from an official source. Check with the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality before your visit.
What to pack
- A warm layer. Kuzuyayla and Kartepe are much cooler than the lake, even in summer.
- Shoes with grip for wet paths beside the Maşukiye streams.
- In winter: waterproof boots, gloves and a hat for the snow.
- Some Turkish lira in small notes for tea gardens, parking attendants and village stalls.
- Sunscreen and a hat in summer; there is little shade on the promenade.
