Şile and Ağva are where Istanbul goes for a breath of sea air. Both are inside the city's borders, on the Black Sea coast of the Asian side, but they feel a long way from the traffic: a white lighthouse on a headland, a small castle on an islet, sandy beaches with open-sea waves, and in Ağva, wooden riverside hotels and fish restaurants along a slow green river.
This guide covers how long it takes to get there, the bus options, a timed itinerary and, importantly, what to know before you swim. Information is as of October 2026, with sources at the end.
Şile and Ağva at a glance
- Şile is a small harbour town about 80 km north-east of central Istanbul, known for its lighthouse, its beaches and Şile bezi, a light hand-woven cotton cloth sold in shops in the centre.
- Ağva is a village about 30 km further east along the coast, built where two rivers, the Göksu and the Yeşilçay, meet the sea. It is the quieter of the two, with riverside guesthouses and boat trips.
- The coast between them has bays, rocky points and village beaches, so the drive is part of the day.

Distance and drive time from Istanbul
| From | To Şile | To Ağva |
|---|---|---|
| Sultanahmet / Taksim | About 83 km, 1 h 15 min–2 h | About 108 km, 1 h 45 min–2 h 30 min |
| Kadıköy / Üsküdar | About 71 km, 1 h–1 h 45 min | About 97 km, 1 h 30 min–2 h 15 min |
| Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) | About 63 km, about 1 h | About 80 km, about 1 h 30 min |
| Şile → Ağva | About 31 km, 35–45 min on the coast road |
From the European side you cross the Bosphorus by bridge and take the Şile road east through the forests of the Asian side. The road is good, but traffic builds on summer weekends: heading out on Saturday morning and back on Sunday afternoon are the slowest times. On a weekday, or outside summer, the drive is usually easy.
How to get to Şile and Ağva
Private car with driver
A car makes the most sense for doing both places in one day. The lighthouse, Şile harbour, the beaches and Ağva are spread along the coast, and buses between them are infrequent. With a driver you go door to door from your hotel and can stop at a bay or a village on the way.
Public bus from Üsküdar: 139 and 139A
There is no direct public bus from the European side. City buses leave from Üsküdar, from the stop opposite the Şemsi Paşa Mosque by the waterfront, which you can reach by ferry or Marmaray:
- 139 Üsküdar–Şile. İETT lists a scheduled journey time of about 2 hours 40 minutes one way. Some departures marked "E" run as expresses via the Şile motorway.
- 139A Üsküdar–Şile/Ağva. Continues along the coast to Ağva. İETT lists about 4 hours one way for the full route, and departures are roughly every two hours according to travel sites.
Both lines use the Istanbulkart and are charged on the city's distance-based tariff. Summer and winter timetables differ, and weekend buses in summer are often full, so check the times on the İETT website or the Mobiett app the day before. For a day trip by bus, Şile alone is realistic; Şile and Ağva together make a long day. Our Istanbul public transport guide explains the Istanbulkart and ferries to Üsküdar.
Things to do in Şile
- Şile Lighthouse. Built by French engineers for Sultan Abdülmecid in 1859 and first lit in 1860, the 19 m tower stands on the cliffs about 1 km north-east of the town. The headland gives the best views over the sea. We could not confirm whether the tower itself is open to visitors on a given day.
- Şile Castle. A small fortress on the islet of Ocaklı at the harbour mouth. Its 2012–2015 restoration was widely criticised for how new it made the castle look, but the setting is still striking.
- The harbour and town centre. Fishing boats, fish restaurants and shops selling Şile bezi, the crinkled cotton cloth made into shirts, scarves and tablecloths. Prices are often open to gentle bargaining.
- Beaches. Ayazma beach is close to the centre, and there are other long sandy beaches either side of the town.
Things to do in Ağva
- A boat trip on the Göksu. Boats leave near the bridge at the entrance to the village and run upriver past reeds, trees and riverside hotels, then turn back. You can share a larger boat or hire a small one; agree the price before you set off, as we could not find published 2026 prices.
- Riverside lunch. Fish restaurants and breakfast places line the Göksu, many with tables right by the water.
- Kilimli Bay. A bay with fine sand and calmer water a short drive from the village, and the rock known as Gelin Kayası (the Bride's Rock).
- Pembe Kayalar (the Pink Rocks). A rocky stretch of coast near Ağva, named after the colour of its stone.
Swimming in the Black Sea: read this first
The Black Sea here is open water with strong waves and rip currents that can pull even good swimmers away from the shore. Drownings happen on this coast every summer. In 2026 the Şile District Governor's office banned swimming on several days because of high waves; on 28 June 2026, for example, swimming was banned on every beach in the district except Ayazma beach and Ağva Merkez beach.
- Swim only at beaches with lifeguards, and only while they are on duty.
- Respect a red flag: it means no swimming that day.
- If you are caught in a current, do not swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of it, then head back in.
- Keep children within arm's reach in the water, even in the shallows.
A one-day Şile and Ağva itinerary
- 08:30 Pick-up at your Istanbul hotel.
- 10:00 Şile Lighthouse and the cliff-top views, then down to the harbour to see the castle on its islet.
- 11:00 Şile town: a walk along the beach and a look at the Şile bezi shops.
- 12:30 Coast road to Ağva, stopping at a bay on the way if the weather is good.
- 13:15 Lunch by the Göksu: grilled fish or a late Turkish breakfast at a riverside restaurant.
- 14:30 Boat trip on the river, about an hour.
- 15:45 Kilimli Bay or the Pink Rocks for a walk by the sea.
- 17:00 Leave for Istanbul and arrive at your hotel around 19:00, depending on traffic.
On a summer weekend, leave earlier and consider doing the day in reverse, starting with Ağva, so that you are not driving back in the busiest hours.
When to go
- June to early September: beach season, with lifeguards on the main beaches. Weekends are crowded and the roads are slow; weekdays are much better.
- May and late September to October: usually the most pleasant for walking and lunch by the river, with far fewer people. The sea is cooler.
- November to March: windy and often wet on the coast, but atmospheric, with storms on the sea and quiet fish restaurants. Some seasonal beach businesses close.
What to bring
- A windproof layer: the coast is often cooler and windier than central Istanbul.
- Swimwear and a towel in summer, and shoes you can walk on wet rocks with.
- Sunscreen and a hat; there is little shade on the beaches.
- Some Turkish lira in small notes for the boat, parking and tea gardens. See our money guide.
