The most common way to lose half a day in Istanbul is to cross the city to a palace that is closed that day. Istanbul's sights do not share one timetable: the National Palaces close on different weekdays, Ministry of Culture museums mostly open every day, the mosques close to sightseeing around each prayer, and the Grand Bazaar shuts on Sundays.
This guide puts the opening hours, ticket office closing times and weekly closing days of the main sights in one place. Everything below is as of 30 October 2026, taken from the official pages (muze.gov.tr, millisaraylar.gov.tr and the sights' own websites) wherever one exists. Where there is no official timetable, as with the bazaars and the mosques, we say so.
Opening hours of Istanbul's main sights (October 2026)

| Topkapı Palace | 09:00 (visiting plan to 17:30) | Ticket office 09:00–17:00 | Tuesday |
| Dolmabahçe Palace | 09:00 (visiting plan to 17:30) | Ticket office 09:00–17:00 | Monday |
| Basilica Cistern | Opens 09:00; closing time not confirmed under the new operator | Not confirmed | None reported |
| Galata Tower | 08:30–23:00 (night session from 18:30) | Last entry 22:00 | None |
| Maiden's Tower | 09:00–18:00 | Box office 17:00; last boat back 17:45 | None |

| Chora (Kariye Mosque) | Usually 09:00–18:00, paused at prayer times | Ticket booth at the entrance | Friday (closed to tourists all day) |
| Istanbul Modern | Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00, Friday to 20:00 | Last entry 30 minutes before closing | Monday |
| Miniatürk | 10:00–18:00 | Card or İstanbulkart only, no cash | Monday |
A few patterns are worth remembering. Monday is the worst day for palaces and smaller museums: Dolmabahçe, Rumeli Fortress, Istanbul Modern and Miniatürk are all shut. Tuesday is the one day Topkapı is closed. Friday is the awkward day for mosques: the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia close to tourists around the noon prayer, and the Chora does not admit tourists at all. Sunday is when the Grand Bazaar is closed but the Spice Bazaar stays open.
Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year, so there is no clock change in autumn. What does change is the length of the day: from October the evening prayer falls around 18:00, which pulls the end of mosque visiting time earlier.
Which Istanbul museums are closed on which day?
- Monday: Dolmabahçe Palace, Rumeli Fortress, Istanbul Modern, Miniatürk. Open instead: Topkapı, Hagia Sophia, the Archaeology Museums, Galata Tower, Maiden's Tower and both bazaars.
- Tuesday: Topkapı Palace (including the Harem and Hagia Irene). Dolmabahçe is a good alternative that day.
- Friday: Chora closed to tourists all day; the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia closed to tourists around midday. Museums and palaces open as normal, and Istanbul Modern stays open until 20:00.
- Sunday: Grand Bazaar closed. The Spice Bazaar, Topkapı, Dolmabahçe and the museums are open, and they are busier with local visitors.
- Open every day: Galata Tower, Maiden's Tower, Istanbul Archaeology Museums and the Spice Bazaar, apart from holiday exceptions.
Hagia Sophia and the mosques: prayer-time closures
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye and the Chora are working mosques. They close to sightseeing for roughly 60–90 minutes around each daily prayer, longer on Fridays. None publishes a fixed visitor timetable, so the reliable way to plan is the day's prayer times from Diyanet, Turkey's religious authority. These are the times for the end of October 2026:
| Prayer | 30 Oct 2026 | 2 Nov 2026 | What it means for visitors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fajr | 05:59 | 06:03 | Before visiting hours |
| Dhuhr (noon) | 12:53 | 12:53 | Mosques close to visitors from about 12:20 to 13:45; on Friday longer |
| Asr (afternoon) | 15:43 | 15:40 | Short closure, about 15:15–16:15 |
| Maghrib (sunset) | 18:10 | 18:07 | Around the end of visiting hours |
| Isha | 19:31 | 19:27 | After visiting hours |
Hagia Sophia visiting hours: the tourist route to the upper galleries usually opens around 09:00. The closing time varies with the season and there is no official published timetable. On Fridays the tourist route closes from about 30 minutes before until about 90 minutes after the noon prayer, so in late October roughly 12:25 to 14:25. The €25 gallery ticket is sold at the booth opposite the Fountain of Ahmed III.
Friday prayer (Cuma namazı) is the longest closure of the week. The Blue Mosque does not admit tourists on Friday morning until after the prayer, usually early afternoon, and the Chora stays closed to tourists all day. On a Friday, see the mosques early on Thursday or Saturday instead, and use Friday for palaces and museums.
When do the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar close?
Neither bazaar publishes an official timetable, and individual shops set their own hours. As a rule of thumb, as of October 2026:
- Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı): Monday to Saturday from about 08:30 to 19:00. Closed on Sundays. Many shops are fully set up only by mid-morning, and some start packing up before 19:00.
- Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) in Eminönü: every day from about 08:00 to 19:30, with shorter hours on Sunday. It is the market to visit when the Grand Bazaar is shut.
- Both bazaars close on religious holidays, at least on the first day. The streets around them, such as Mahmutpaşa and the Eminönü food stalls, often keep trading.
Ticket office closing times and last entry
At most ticketed sights the ticket office closes about an hour before the doors. Topkapı and Dolmabahçe stop selling at 17:00, Rumeli Fortress and the Maiden's Tower at 17:00, and the Archaeology Museums at 17:30. At Topkapı, 17:00 is far too late in practice: the palace, Harem and Hagia Irene need at least three hours.
Topkapı and Dolmabahçe are run by the National Palaces (Millî Saraylar) and are not on the Ministry of Culture's ticket system, so the Museum Pass Istanbul does not cover them. Buy their tickets at the gate, on millisaraylar.gov.tr or in the Millî Saraylar app.
Night sessions and late openings
- Galata Tower stays open until 23:00 every day, with a separate night museum session from 18:30 and last entry at 22:00. It is the only major sight with a year-round evening opening.
- Istanbul Modern stays open until 20:00 on Fridays.
- Topkapı night tours are a summer programme. In 2026 they ran on Saturday evenings from 20 June to mid-September; there are none in autumn and winter.
- Dolmabahçe opened until 19:00 in summer 2026 (26 June–14 September). From mid-September it is back to ticket sales until 17:00.
- Miniatürk opened until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays from 26 June to 13 September; it is now on its normal 10:00–18:00 hours.
- Basilica Cistern: under the previous operator there was an evening session from 19:30 to 22:00. We could not confirm whether it continues since the change of operator in June 2026.
Best time of day for each sight
- First thing (08:30–09:30): Topkapı (head straight for the Harem), Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, before the tour groups.
- Late morning: the Grand Bazaar, once the shops are open, and the Basilica Cistern.
- Early afternoon, after the noon prayer: Süleymaniye, the Spice Bazaar and the Archaeology Museums, which are rarely crowded.
- Late afternoon: Dolmabahçe (arrive by 16:00), Rumeli Fortress or the Maiden's Tower, then the Salacak waterfront for sunset.
- Evening: Galata Tower's night session, or Istanbul Modern on a Friday.

Public holidays
Holidays change the picture. Topkapı and Dolmabahçe are closed on 1 January and on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr); Dolmabahçe is also closed on the first day of Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha). The bazaars close at least on the first day of both religious holidays, while most Ministry museums stay open. Dates, closures and the sights that are open on each holiday are in our guide to Istanbul public holidays and opening hours.
Getting between the sights
Sultanahmet's sights are within a short walk of each other, and the T1 tram links them with Eminönü and Kabataş for Dolmabahçe. Rumeli Fortress, Istanbul Modern, Miniatürk and the Chora are further out. A fixed-price transfer from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet is $70 in a Private Mercedes Vito or $80 in a VIP Vito; to Galata or Taksim it is $65 / $75. Prices are per vehicle for up to 6 passengers, tolls included, paid to the driver on arrival.
