Museum Pass Istanbul: Price, What It Covers and Whether It Is Worth It

The Ministry of Culture's €105 MuseumPass Istanbul explained: the sites on the official list, the big names it does not cover, the Topkapı Harem question, and simple sums to tell whether it saves you money.

MuseumPass Istanbul is the official multi-entry card of Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism. For a single price it lets you into a set list of state museums in Istanbul over five days, so you do not have to buy a ticket at each one.

It is often confused with commercial "Istanbul passes" sold by private companies, and with the MüzeKart, the annual card for Turkish citizens. This guide covers only the official Ministry pass, with prices and rules as of October 2026, and helps you work out whether it is worth buying for your trip.

Because the five days start with your first visit, not on the day you buy, you can buy the pass before you travel and start it when it suits you. The Ministry also asks visitors to check each museum's status (open, closed or under restoration) on muze.gov.tr before going.

What the Museum Pass Istanbul covers

The Ministry says the pass covers 13 museums. Its map of valid sites lists the places below. The ticket prices are what you would otherwise pay as a foreign visitor, from the Ministry's price list and, for Topkapı, the National Palaces administration.

Our guides to Topkapı Palace, Galata Tower, the Maiden's Tower, the Archaeology Museums and Rumeli Fortress cover each of them in detail.

The Topkapı Harem and Hagia Irene question

Topkapı Palace is now run by the National Palaces administration (Milli Saraylar), which sells a combined ticket for the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene at ₺2,750 for foreign visitors, or about €50 at the exchange rate of around 55 lira to the euro in autumn 2026. Its official page says the Museum Card is not valid in the Harem or Hagia Irene, which have their own tickets at ₺1,050 each.

The Ministry's MuseumPass map, on the other hand, lists the Harem and Hagia Irene among the valid sites, and travel guides disagree about what happens at the gate. We could not confirm which rule applies to MuseumPass holders as of October 2026. Budget for the two extra tickets in case they are needed, and ask at the Topkapı ticket office.

Most covered museums are in Sultanahmet. See the fixed price from Istanbul Airport.

What it does not cover

Several of Istanbul's best-known sights are run by other bodies or are working mosques, so the pass does not apply:

  • [Hagia Sophia](/en/blog/hagia-sophia-visitor-guide): a mosque; foreign visitors pay €25 for the upper-gallery route.
  • The Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum: a separate Ministry museum at €25, which muze.gov.tr says does not accept the Museum Card. It is not on the MuseumPass map.
  • The [Basilica Cistern](/en/blog/basilica-cistern-visitor-guide): run by the General Directorate of Foundations since June 2026, with its own tickets.
  • [Dolmabahçe Palace](/en/blog/dolmabahce-palace-visitor-guide): a National Palaces site with its own tickets and combined passes.
  • The [Chora Church (Kariye Mosque)](/en/blog/chora-church-kariye): a mosque with its own €20 visitor fee.
  • The [Blue Mosque](/en/blog/blue-mosque-visitor-guide) and [Süleymaniye](/en/blog/suleymaniye-mosque-visitor-guide): free to enter, so no pass is needed.
  • Transport, Bosphorus cruises and night museum sessions are not included.

Is the Museum Pass Istanbul worth it?

It depends on how many of the covered sites you will really visit in five days. The sums below use the normal foreign-visitor prices in the table above, with Topkapı's combined ticket counted at about €50.

Your plan in 5 daysSeparate ticketsWith the passResult
Topkapı + Archaeology Museumsabout €65€105Not worth it
Topkapı + Galata Tower + Archaeology + Turkish and Islamic Artsabout €112€105Roughly break-even
The four above + Maiden's Towerabout €139€105 (+ ₺110 boat)Saves around €30
The five above + Science and Technology + Mevlevi Lodge + Rumeli Fortressabout €162€105 (+ ₺110 boat)Saves around €55
Our own calculation from official prices as of October 2026, using about 55 lira to the euro for Topkapı. The Maiden's Tower boat is paid separately either way. If the Topkapı Harem and Hagia Irene are not accepted on the pass, add ₺1,050 each.

There are also softer benefits. With the pass you go straight to the entrance instead of the ticket queue, which can be long at Topkapı and Galata Tower in summer. You still go through the security check and any entry queue like everyone else. And because the pass is already paid for, it is easier to drop into a smaller museum, such as the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, for half an hour.

MüzeKart: the card for Turkish citizens

The MüzeKart is a separate, year-long card that covers more than 350 museums and archaeological sites belonging to the Ministry, the National Palaces and the Çanakkale area. The mobile version is, in the Ministry's words, available exclusively to Turkish citizens, and the Ministry lists it as not valid in the Topkapı Harem, Hagia Irene and a few other places.

We could not confirm whether foreign residents with a Turkish residence permit can buy a MüzeKart, or the current price, from the Ministry's pages. If you live in Türkiye, ask at a museum ticket office. For visitors, the MuseumPass is the card to look at.

Other MuseumPass cards

If Istanbul is part of a longer trip, the Ministry also sells regional passes. As of October 2026, muze.gov.tr lists MuseumPass Türkiye at €165 for 15 days, covering more than 350 sites across the country, MuseumPass Cappadocia at €65 for 3 days, MuseumPass The Aegean at €95 for 7 days and MuseumPass The Mediterranean at €90 for 7 days.

A five-day plan that uses the pass

  1. Day 1 (not a Tuesday): Topkapı Palace at opening time, then the Archaeology Museums next door and the Science and Technology museum in Gülhane Park.
  2. Day 2: Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque (outside the pass) in the morning, then the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts on the Hippodrome.
  3. Day 3: Galata Tower early, the Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum and a walk down İstiklal Avenue.
  4. Day 4 (not a Monday): the Bosphorus: Rumeli Fortress and the villages of Bebek and Ortaköy.
  5. Day 5: the Asian side and the Maiden's Tower from Karaköy or Üsküdar.

Getting between the museums

Most covered sites are within walking distance of each other in Sultanahmet, and Galata Tower is a tram ride or a walk across the Galata Bridge away. Rumeli Fortress is further up the Bosphorus and the Maiden's Tower needs a boat, so those two days take more planning.

If you want to fit several sites into one day without waiting for trams and taxis, a car with driver by the hour costs $40 per hour in a Private Mercedes Vito or $55 per hour in a VIP Vito, minimum 3 hours, for up to 6 passengers. Book hourly or see our private tours.

From the airport, our fixed-price transfer from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet is $70 / $80, and to Galata $65 / $75, per vehicle with tolls included, paid to the driver on arrival. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup; WhatsApp +90 507 055 44 36. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138).

Questions travellers ask

How much is the Museum Pass Istanbul?

As of October 2026, the official MuseumPass Istanbul costs €105 and is valid for 5 days from your first museum visit, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's muze.gov.tr.

Does the Museum Pass include Hagia Sophia?

No. Hagia Sophia is a mosque and foreign visitors pay a separate €25 fee for the gallery route. The Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum across the square is also not covered.

Does the Museum Pass include the Basilica Cistern?

No. The Basilica Cistern is run by the General Directorate of Foundations and sells its own tickets.

Is Topkapı Palace included in the Museum Pass Istanbul?

Yes, Topkapı Palace is on the Ministry's list of valid sites. Whether the Harem and Hagia Irene are also accepted is unclear: the Ministry's map lists them, but the palace's official page says the Museum Card is not valid there. Ask at the ticket office and budget ₺1,050 each in case.

Is the Museum Pass Istanbul worth it?

If you plan to visit Topkapı Palace, Galata Tower and at least two or three other covered museums within five days, it usually saves money and the ticket queue. If you mainly want Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern, it is not worth it.

Where can I buy the Museum Pass Istanbul?

Online as an e-card on the Ministry's site, muze.gov.tr, or at the sales points listed there. The five days start from your first museum visit, so you can buy it before your trip.

Can foreigners get a MüzeKart?

The Ministry says the mobile MüzeKart is available exclusively to Turkish citizens. We could not confirm the rules for foreign residents; visitors should look at the MuseumPass instead.
