For almost four centuries Topkapı Palace was the seat of the Ottoman sultans. Today it is a museum spread over four courtyards on the tip of the historic peninsula, with views over the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara.
It is also the most expensive single ticket in Sultanahmet, so it pays to know what is included. This guide sets out the official prices as of October 2026, the closing day, the Harem and Hagia Irene, and how to plan the visit.
A short history
Sultan Mehmed II began the palace soon after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, on the hill above the old Byzantine acropolis. Successive sultans added pavilions, kitchens, libraries and the Harem, so the complex grew as a series of courtyards rather than one great building.
The court moved to Dolmabahçe Palace on the Bosphorus in the mid-19th century, and Topkapı opened as a museum in 1924. Since 2019 it has been run by the Presidency of National Palaces (Milli Saraylar), not by the Ministry of Culture's museum directorate.
Highlights include the Imperial Council Hall (Divan), the palace kitchens with their porcelain collection, the Treasury, the Chamber of Sacred Relics, and the Baghdad and Revan pavilions in the fourth courtyard.
Tickets and prices (as of October 2026)
These are the prices on the official Milli Saraylar page for Topkapı Palace, checked in October 2026:
| Ticket | Foreign visitors | Turkish citizens | Discounted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combined: Palace + Harem + Hagia Irene | ₺2,750 | ₺500 | ₺250 |
| Harem only | ₺1,050 | ₺400 | ₺150 |
| Hagia Irene only | ₺1,050 | ₺350 | ₺150 |
| Night tour (seasonal) | ₺4,000 | ₺1,000 | Students: ₺750 foreign / ₺500 Turkish |
For most foreign visitors the combined ticket at ₺2,750 is the one to buy: it is the only palace ticket on the official list, and it includes the Harem and Hagia Irene. The separate Harem and Hagia Irene tickets matter mainly if you enter the palace grounds with a Museum Card, because the official page states the Museum Card is not valid in the Harem or Hagia Irene.
Students aged 7–25 with a student card get the discounted rate; foreign students pay twice the discounted price and are asked to show a physical ISIC card.
Where to buy
Buy at the ticket office at the palace, on the official Milli Saraylar website (millisaraylar.gov.tr, "Bilet Al") or through the Milli Saraylar mobile app, which stores the e-ticket on your phone. Topkapı is not sold on muze.gov.tr, the Ministry of Culture's site. Resellers offering "fast-track" tickets charge more than the official price.
Opening hours and closing days
- Closed: every Tuesday.
- Ticket office: 09:00 to 17:00. The official page gives only ticket office hours, so arrive well before 17:00.
- Holidays: closed on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr). The Turkish and English versions of the official page disagree about New Year's Day, so check before visiting on 1 January.
Night tours are a summer programme. For 2026 they were reported to run on Saturday evenings from 20 June to mid-September, between 21:00 and 23:00. Night-tour prices are on the official page, but we could not confirm any dates beyond the summer season; check millisaraylar.gov.tr if you are visiting in the warmer months.
The Harem
The Harem was the private quarters of the sultan, his mother (the valide sultan), his wives, children and their household. It is a warren of rooms, corridors and small courtyards, with some of the palace's finest İznik tile work.
Its entrance is in the second courtyard, next to the Divan. Many visitors leave it until last and then run out of time or energy, so it is worth going in first, while it is quieter. Allow about an hour.
Hagia Irene
Hagia Irene is a Byzantine church in the first courtyard, rebuilt under Justinian I in the 6th century. It was never converted into a mosque; the Ottomans used it as an arsenal. Its plain interior and the large cross in the apse mosaic make a striking contrast with Hagia Sophia next door. It is included in the combined ticket and takes 15–20 minutes.
Dress code and rules
Topkapı is a museum, so there is no formal dress code for most of it. Dress modestly for the Chamber of Sacred Relics, which holds objects revered by Muslims, including relics attributed to the Prophet Muhammad; photography may be restricted in some rooms. There is a security check at the entrance, and weapons are not allowed.
Best time to visit and how long to spend
Arrive at 09:00, when the ticket office opens, and head straight for the Harem or the Treasury before the tour groups arrive. Weekends and Turkish public holidays tend to be busier than weekdays.
Allow at least 3 hours for the palace, Harem and Hagia Irene; half a day is more comfortable. The grounds involve a lot of walking on cobbles and stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. The terraces of the fourth courtyard are a good place to rest, with views over the Bosphorus.
