The Bosphorus is the 30-kilometre strait that splits Istanbul between Europe and Asia and joins the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. Its shores are lined with Ottoman palaces, wooden waterside mansions (yalı), fortresses and fishing villages, and the best way to see them is from a boat.
You do not need an expensive tour to do it. The city ferry company, Şehir Hatları, runs two sightseeing routes every day for a few hundred lira, and an ordinary commuter ferry gives you a short taste for the price of a bus ride. Private boats, dinner cruises and yacht hire cost more and vary a lot, so this guide covers what to check before you pay. Timetables and fares are as of October 2026.

The Long Bosphorus Tour (Uzun Boğaz Turu)
This is the classic trip, run by Şehir Hatları on a regular ferry every day. It sails the full length of the Bosphorus, calling at piers on both shores, to Anadolu Kavağı, the last village on the Asian side before the Black Sea. The boat waits there until 15:00, giving you about two and a half hours for lunch and a walk, then sails back.
| Pier | Outbound (daily) | Return (daily) |
|---|---|---|
| Eminönü | 10:35 | arrives 16:40 |
| Beşiktaş | 10:50 | 16:25 |
| Üsküdar | 11:05 | 16:10 |
| Kanlıca | 11:35 | 15:40 |
| Sarıyer | 12:05 | 15:20 |
| Rumeli Kavağı | 12:15 | 15:10 |
| Anadolu Kavağı | arrives 12:25 | 15:00 |
Fares (as of October 2026): ₺640 return for foreign passengers and ₺320 for Turkish residents (yerli yolcu), with children under 12 at a reduced fare and under-6s free. The official tariff also lists a one-way fare of ₺195 but gives no separate foreign-passenger price for it, so ask at the ticket office if you only want to go one way.
At Anadolu Kavağı, the seafront is lined with fish restaurants; agree on the price of fish by weight before you order. A steep path of about 20–30 minutes leads up to the ruins of Yoros Castle, a Byzantine and Genoese fortress with a view of the Black Sea entrance and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Parts of the site have been under excavation in recent years, so access may be limited. Wear proper shoes.

The Short Bosphorus Tour (Kısa Boğaz Turu)
The Short Bosphorus Tour leaves Eminönü daily at 14:40, calls at Üsküdar at 14:55 and Ortaköy at 15:10, according to the official timetable. The fare is ₺340 for foreign passengers and ₺170 for Turkish residents (as of October 2026).
The official page gives only these departure times and does not say where the boat turns round or when it gets back. Older guides describe a round trip of about two hours that turns north of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, but we could not confirm the current route. Ask at the ticket office before you board if you have an evening plan.
What you will see along the way
Heading north from Eminönü, the European shore is on your left and the Asian shore on your right. Pick your side if you have a favourite:
- European side (left going north): Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace, the Ortaköy Mosque beside the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the cafés of Arnavutköy and Bebek, and Rumeli Fortress below the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.
- Asian side (right going north): Üsküdar and the Maiden's Tower just offshore, Beylerbeyi Palace, Kuzguncuk and Çengelköy, Anadolu Fortress, and Kanlıca, known for the yoghurt sold by the pier.
- Further north: the wooded hills and old summer villas of Tarabya, Yeniköy and Sarıyer, and finally the two Kavağı villages where the strait opens to the Black Sea.
In summer, get to the pier half an hour early for a seat on the open upper deck. In winter, the enclosed lower deck is warm and has big windows, and you share it with commuters rather than crowds.
The cheapest option: a commuter ferry
If you only have an hour, take an ordinary city ferry across the water with an Istanbulkart. As of October 2026, the Şehir Hatları full fare is ₺58.52 from Eminönü to Üsküdar and ₺65.21 from Karaköy or Beşiktaş to Kadıköy. You get the old city skyline, the mouth of the Golden Horn and the Maiden's Tower in about 15–25 minutes, and you can explore the Asian side before coming back. See our Istanbul public transport guide for how the card works and our Kadıköy and Moda guide for what to do on the other side.
Private operators' short cruises
Around Eminönü, Kabataş and Üsküdar, private companies such as Turyol and Dentur Avrasya, and smaller boat owners, sell short Bosphorus cruises that typically last one to two hours and leave often in high season. They are convenient if you arrive at the pier without a plan.
Prices are set by each operator and are not published in one official place, so we have not quoted any. Before you pay, check: how long the trip really is, whether it turns at the first or second bridge, whether it stops anywhere, and whether drinks or a guide are included. Buy from a ticket booth rather than from someone approaching you on the street.
Bosphorus dinner cruises
Dinner cruises are evening trips of around three hours with a set menu and a show, often folk dancing and a belly dancer. They are sold through hotels, travel agencies and booking sites, and the price depends on the operator, the menu and whether alcohol is included. Things worth checking:
- Hotel pickup: many include it, but in a shared minibus that collects from several hotels, so the evening can start well before departure.
- Drinks: whether alcohol is unlimited, limited or extra.
- Table position: window tables usually cost more.
- The show: if you want a quiet dinner, choose a boat without one, or a private yacht instead.
Private yacht hire
For a group, a family or a special occasion, you can hire a motor yacht with crew by the hour. Boats leave from marinas and private piers along the shore, such as Kuruçeşme, Bebek and Arnavutköy, and sunset is the most popular time. Ask for a written quote that states the number of hours, the boarding and drop-off piers, the maximum number of guests, and whether food, drinks and fuel are included.
We do not run boats, but we can drive your group to and from the pier, which is useful because many marinas have little parking and are awkward to reach by public transport. With up to 6 passengers per Mercedes Vito, everyone arrives together.
Best time of day and year
Late afternoon is the best time on the water: the light is warm on the European shore and the palaces glow at sunset. Şehir Hatları also lists a Mehtap (moonlight) Tour on its tariff at ₺730 return for foreign passengers (as of October 2026). It is a summer programme, so check the timetable for dates. In winter, cruises still run, but choose a clear day; low cloud and drizzle hide the hills. See our guide to the best time to visit Istanbul for the weather by month.
Getting to the piers
Eminönü pier is next to the Galata Bridge and the T1 tram stop of the same name, a short walk from the Spice Bazaar and about 15 minutes on foot from Sultanahmet. Beşiktaş, the second stop on the long tour, is easier if you are staying around Taksim, Nişantaşı or Beşiktaş.
From Istanbul Airport, our fixed-price transfer to Sultanahmet costs $70 in a Private Mercedes Vito or $80 in a VIP Vito, and to Beşiktaş $65 or $75. Prices are per vehicle for up to 6 passengers, with tolls included, and you pay the driver on arrival. For more ideas, see things to do in Istanbul. Istanbul VIP is operated by Regatta Turizm (TÜRSAB licence 10138).
